Our Learning This Week...

I cannot believe we are already nearing the end of another year!  We have been busy with lots of exciting learning and special experiences.


In writing, students continued developing their stories. They completed storyboarding their ideas and have now moved on to creating their rough drafts. It has been exciting to see their creativity come to life as they begin turning their plans into detailed stories.



 

In math, we wrapped up our unit on graphing. Students reviewed the different types of graphs we have learned about, identified the important parts of a graph, and practiced reading and interpreting the information displayed on graphs.





In social studies, we began exploring the different levels of government and discussing the responsibilities of each level. We started by learning about the role of the mayor and discovered who Calgary’s mayor is.






Our artists have been hard at work creating unique self-portraits. Students were given half of their face and followed a directed drawing lesson to complete the other half. They did a fantastic job carefully observing their features and adding their own creative touches.




In gym we began learning how to play foursquare. The kids had a great time learning the rules and developing their skills.





This week also marked our final visit with the ducks. We joined the other classes in the school to watch them take one last walk up and down the hall before they moved on to their next adventure. It was a special way to say goodbye to our feathered friends!










On Friday, we welcomed a special guest, Jackie Soppit, who visited our school to share the traditions of Jingle Dancing and hoop dancing as part of our National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration. Students had a wonderful time learning about these meaningful cultural traditions and experiencing the joy and storytelling that are shared through dance.

Hello Families! Happy Friday! Welcome to the first of our many blog posts for the year! Here you will find highlights from our week, upcoming events, important reminders, links to videos and activities and more. This week I have posted some photos from both our first and second weeks of school. Enjoy! In langauge arts, students have explored the parts of a sentence including capitals, periods and spaces. They have also learned that sentences have two parts-- a naming part (subject) and telling part (predicate). Students have also been learning about the parts of speech beginning with nouns. Through videos, songs and games students have been practicing identifying nouns as either a person, place or thing.  In math, students have been working on recognizing and naming numbers to 20 in grade 1 and into the 100s in grade 2. Our Learning This Week...

Hello Families! Happy 3rd Week of School : )  We had a great week. Here's what we have been up to! In language arts we read the book, Someday, by Eileen Spinelli. After reading, we shared our own dreams for the future. The students were very thoughtful about what they wanted to be or do when they grow up. Following our sharing time the students wrote their dream for the future down on a cloud which became part of an art project and class display.  Students have also continued to learn about the parts of a sentence and various parts of speech. This week we focused on verbs. Students learned that there are two kinds of verbs-- action verbs and being verbs. We focused on action verbs. Students had fun playing Charades acting out different verbs and getting the class to guess what their action was.  In math, students continued to develop their understanding of place value and how to use base ten blocks to build numbers into the double-digits (Gr. 1) and triple-digits (Gr. 2)....

Hello! Happy Friday : ) I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Here's what we have been up to. -------------------------------------- In language arts we are learning about the parts and elements of stories. Students listened to, read and discussed several stories identifying the various story elements (character, setting, events, problem and solution). After reading and retelling each story the students then worked on sequencing and organizing the various elements into the proper part of the story (i.e. beginning, middle or end).   In math, students began a new unit on patterns and sorting. They began by learning about the different attributes of objects such as size, shape and colour. Then they practiced sorting various objects using different criteria or characteristics.  In social, students began presenting their traditions to their classmates.
