Our Learning This Week...

Happy Friday! Here's a peek at our week : ) 


Students were busy this week learning about and reviewing the letter sounds for /d/, /n/ and /o/. As part of their learning students are beginning to build words using our moveable alphabet. Students listen as the teacher orally segments the sounds in a list of target words, select the letters that match the sounds and then blend the sounds to read the words. 






In writing students have been unscrambling sentences listening for the naming part (i.e. noun/subject) and the telling part (i.e. verb/predicate). We worked on a number of sentences as a group and independently. Students also continued to review other important elements sentences (e.g capitals, punctuation, meatball spaces).





In math, students focused on skip counting by 5s and 10s. They listening to songs, played games, and used a hundred chart to show what numbers you saying when counting by 5s and 10s. Students also discussed why skip counting is important and how it can help us in our math.

In social, students finished their classroom maps and had fun using Google Maps to find their houses! Students were then tasked with providing directions to an alien coming to their house for a birthday party! Students learned that we don't just live in a house. We live in a house, that is in a city, in a province, in a country, on a continent on the earth.  They created a flipbook showing all the places that they live










 


This week we also spent time talking about Remembrance Day and why we celebrate this important day. Students discussed the concepts of freedom and peace and how we can help to make the world a more peaceful place. Students created some lovely art expressing what peace means to them and participated in our Remembrance Day Assembly.






In gym, students began using scoops and balls working on developing their hand-eye coordination. They practiced tossing it up and catching the ball, letting it bounce then catching it and tossing it to a partner.

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary. Our Learning This Week...

Hello Everyone! What an amazing performance by the students at EMJ last night and.  especially our very own Grade Ones! They were fantastic! Keep reading to see what else we have been up to this week : )  --------------------------------------------------- In language arts we have been learning about 'how-to' or procedural writing. To start we talked about why we write-- to entertain, inform, teach, instruct etc. Then we looked specifically at giving instructions. The students gave me the steps to make a Wow butter and jam sandwich with some hilarious results! Then we made popcorn and the students worked in groups to write down and draw the steps to make popcorn. We also ate some popcorn so that made it even more fun!  In math, we have continued to learn about counting collections of objects and representing those numbers in a variety of ways. Hello Families! Happy Friday! Welcome to the first of our many blog posts for the year! Here you will find highlights from our week, upcoming events, important reminders, links to videos and activities and more. This week I have posted some photos from both our first and second weeks of school. Enjoy! In langauge arts, students have explored the parts of a sentence including capitals, periods and spaces. They have also learned that sentences have two parts-- a naming part (subject) and telling part (predicate). Students have also been learning about the parts of speech beginning with nouns. Through videos, songs and games students have been practicing identifying nouns as either a person, place or thing.  In math, students have been working on recognizing and naming numbers to 20 in grade 1 and into the 100s in grade 2.
