Our Learning This Week...

Hello! Happy Friday : ) I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Here's what we have been up to.

--------------------------------------

In language arts we are learning about the parts and elements of stories. Students listened to, read and discussed several stories identifying the various story elements (character, setting, events, problem and solution). After reading and retelling each story the students then worked on sequencing and organizing the various elements into the proper part of the story (i.e. beginning, middle or end).

In math, students began a new unit on patterns and sorting. They began by learning about the different attributes of objects such as size, shape and colour. Then they practiced sorting various objects using different criteria or characteristics.

In social, students began presenting their traditions to their classmates. We learned about holiday celebrations, movie night, special cultural clothing tradition and more!

Students also began to learn about the concept of a timeline and how timelines can help us to organize and keep track of events in the past. They began creating a short timeline of their life with important events that have happened so far. For example, their birth, losing their first tooth, first day of school etc.

In science, students learned about how movement can be affected by shape and texture. They watched a demonstration of which objects roll and slide the best depending on how the objects are shaped. Then, they were introduced to wheels and how wheels help influence movement.

In P.E. students continued to build on their learning from last week by incorporating some equipment into their routines. They learned how to properly and safely use a trestle and various ways to move on a bench. Students rotated in a kind of circuit creating a movement routine. They began with a balance, followed by some type of movement (roll, crawl, etc.) on the mat and a bridge. They finished their routine by climbing over the trestle and along the bench in a variety of ways (backwards, forwards, walking, crawling, sliding etc.).

We ended the week getting together with our Buddies to go on the computers and explore various activities in our Google Classroom!

Important Updates & Reminders:

Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!

Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know.
