This Week in Room 21....

Here's a look at our learning this week!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week we have been learning about the long /o/ sound and the different ways that this sound can be represented in words. Students worked on making words with the /o_e/ or /oa/ spelling patterns. They also worked on reading words with these spelling patterns and looking for rhymes.

In Health, students learned about how the medicine wheel can help us to stay healthy in our mind and body. The students sat in circle and talked about each of the four dimensions of the medicine wheel-- spirit (to be/who I am), heart (to belong), body (to do), and mind (to know), They drew pictures to show different ways that they can connect with nature (spirit), be healthy (body), relax (mind) and people they can talk to when needed (heart).

In math, students began to learn about mass and how we measure the mass of objects using non-standard units. Students watched a video explaining how to use a scale to weigh objects. They began by using direct comparison-- i.e. weighing a set of objects one to another-- to order objects from lightest to heaviest. Then they learned how to use units (in this case blocks) to weigh a set of objects and order them based on the number of blocks each was equal to. This proved to be an easier and quicker method for comparing and ordering.

April 22 was Earth Day. The students took some time this week to talk about how they can help to protect the earth. They coloured in a picture of the earth and wrote down ways to keep it clean and green!

In gym, students completed our Mission Impossible obstacle course! They have become experts at navigating this challenging course putting their newly acquired gymnastics skills to good use! Many-- if not most-- students were able to make their way through the entire course. They did an excellent job and had lots of fun while developing their coordination, strength and flexibility.

This Week in Room 21....

Another week has flown by in room 21! Here is what we have been working on.

--------------------------------------------------------------

In Language Arts, we have continued working on writing our own stories. Students have been organizing their ideas and stories so that we can work on our final copies next week!

In math, we continued working on measurement. We focused began learning about height and width this week and then moved into measuring monsters. We even created our very own measurement monsters! The kids were very excited to colour and name their measurement monsters once we finished.

In Social, we started learning about the different animals on the Blackfoot Medicine wheel: an eagle, a buffalo, a bear and a wolf. We discussed what these animals represent and asked students to pick which animal they felt represented them the best. Students were eager to share their ideas on what animals they are!

We managed to fit some art in this week as well. We worked on making prints of the animals the students picked. The students enjoyed being able to add their own backgrounds! I love how they turned out.

Gymnastics continued into this week, and the students began running through different stations. Students worked on various movements, balancing, climbing and much more! I think their favourite is definitely the crash mats!

.

It was a very busy week for us but it was full of fun, hands-on activities! Tuesday, April 25th, is my last day with Room 21 and I am sad to say goodbye (for now!). But I have had such a wonderful time with the students and Mrs. Vanderwel and will always remember my experience here!

This Week in Room 21...

Here's a sneak peek at our week.....

-------------------------------------------------------

Over the last couple weeks in Language Arts we have explored fairytales and the different story elements. This week students began retelling and writing their own stories. They have been drawing, colouring, writing and expressing their creativity.

In math, we started talking about measurement and did various activities for measuring length. The students and I explored the length of objects and non-standard units we can use to measure things. We worked on using the terms shorter and longer and measured various objects throughout our classroom!

This week’s Author study was Leo Lionni. We are going to continue looking at his books next week as well. The kids love the colourful art he incorporated into his books.

In Science, we continued learning about plants and introduced the difference between living and nonliving things. We even went on a scavenger hunt on Tuesday and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine outside! The students searched the field and found various living and nonliving items. We also got a class Jade plant. The students are very excited about having it in our classroom and eager to care for it. We also did a fun, sticky note activity where students thought about different living and non-living things, then stuck them to our anchor chart!

In gym we continued with gymnastics. Each student explored new movements and activities using trestles and mats. It has been great watching them try new things. They have learned how to safely climb over the trestles, use the benches in a variety of ways-- as a balance beam, sliding on their tummies, slidng backwards, sideways and much more-- and move on the mats in different ways.

This Week in Room 21...

Hello Everyone! We just want to wish you all a Happy Easter! Enjoy the long weekend with your families : ) Here's a sneak peek at our week.......

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week in writing the students examined fairytales to determine the problem, events and solution. After listening to Hansel & Gretel they ordered the story events into a booklet to look like the candy house in the story.

We also worked on long vowel sounds concentrating on the spelling patterns for the long a vowel sound-- ai, a_e and ay. The students worked on making words using the different long a spelling patterns and sorting words into groups based on ai, ay or a_e.

In math, we finished working on solving addition and subtraction problems. The students had to solve mixed problems looking for clue words to indicate if the problem was asking them to use addition or subtraction.

This week's Author Study author was Robert Munsch. His stories are known for their funny and often ridiculous story lines! The kids laughed along with the characters and their hilarious predicaments in each book.

In Science we began talking about plants. Students learned about the importance of plants, the parts of plants and the needs of plants. They began an experiment to see under what conditions plants grow best. They planted seeds in a variety of locations and conditions-- no/low sun, lots of dirt, no dirt, no water etc.  Each day they will make observations and record any changes in the plants.

In gym we began our unit on gymnastics. This unit will run throughout the month of April. Students are reminded to wear comfortable, stretchy pants and a shirt. No leggings (with the toe), hoodies, jewelry, skirts/dresses etc. Students began by learning how to move in a variety of ways and in a variety of spaces. They practiced animals moves, rolls and balances. They learned to balance using one, two and three body parts.

In art, the students created some fun egg/rabbit easter crafts. They decorated one egg with a colourful pattern or design and cut it in half lengthwise. Then they drew a rabbit face on the other egg. Finally, they attached the two halves of the first egg to the second egg to make rabbit ears.
