This Week in Room 21...

*Please note that the*

WINTER/SOLSTICE CONCERT

date has been changed from

Dec. 7th to Dec. 19th

----------------------------------------------------------------------

In math we have begun learning about addition. Students have learned to use ten frames and number paths to help them complete addition problems accurately.

In writing, we read the story "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. We reviewed the parts of a story and various story elements. Then did both an oral and written retelling of the story. Students continue to work on remembering what we need to include in a sentence and to add interesting details to their sentences to make them more exciting.

We have also been reading other stories by Jan Brett and identifying the characters, setting, problem and solution for each as we continue to learn about story structure and story elements.

In science students tested materials to see how physical changes such as bending, twisting, cutting, breaking etc. would-- or would not-- affect them. They learned that physical changes can affect how they look but not change what they are. For example, playdoh can be bent, stretched, cut, twisted and more but it is still playdoh.

In gym, we have been learning to use scoops and balls. Students have been developing their hand-eye coordination to toss, catch and pass the ball on their own and with a partner.

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
  • Healthy Hunger is up and running. Below are the upcoming fun lunch dates. To order please go to the Healthy Hunger website.

Upcoming Events and Dates to Remember:

Dec 4-7 - Winter Market

Dec. 6 - Scholastic Book Fair (during our Library time)

This Week in Room 21....

Hello and Happy Friday! It was lovely to meet with so many students and parents to talk about their progress. Thank you to everyone who was able to come in : ) Here's a look at our week : )

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In writing we have been working on retelling and summarizing stories. The students continue to review the parts of stories (beginning, middle and end) and also to sequence the parts of a story correctly. They also worked on writing one or more sentences-- three or more if students are in Gr. 2-- telling about each part of the story. We learned about using time markers (first, then, next, finally) to indicate when events took place and also to use descriptive words and phrases from the story to make their writing more interesting.

In math, we created an Interactive Math Wall on which students can demonstrate how to represent numbers in a variety of ways using base ten blocks, tallies, beaded number lines, words and using expanded form to name a few.

In art we finished working on our Metis beading art project. The class watched a video about Metis culture and bead work in particular. The students did a fantastic job creating flowers using beads and pipe cleaners. This was part of our learning around Metis Week. The students also listened to a story called 'The Giving Tree: A Retelling of a Traditional Metis Story' and compared it to another story we read earlier in the year also entitled 'The Giving Tree' by Shel Silverstein. We noted the important similarities and differences between these two stories. The students learned that if we use something we should give something back and also that we shouldn't give expecting to get something in return. It is more important to give than it is to get.

In Social we learned about early First Nations communities living on the prairies. We watched a video discussing the roles of men and women and how they each contributed to their community.  We created a page to go in their visual journal representing their learning.

In science, students learned about the measurable properties of objects. Measurable properties are properties that we can assign a value too. They used both standard (cm) and non-standard units (tiles, cubes) to determine the length, weight and area of a variety of objects.

In gym we continued practicing our basketball skills, learning how to move and dribble at the same time, pass while moving and also shoot on net.

This Week in Room 21...

It was another short week. Please note that we did not have Library this week as the librarian has been away. Take a look below at what we have been up to.

------------------------------------------------------------------

IMPORTANT REMINDER:

Booking for Parent-Teacher Conferences is now available in PowerSchool. Log in to your My CBE account to book at time to meet with me next Thursday evening or            Friday from 8-1pm.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

This week we have focused on learning about story parts and elements. Students learned that stories have a beginning, middle and end. They also learned that part fo the story differen elements are introduced. For example, in the beginning we learn about the cahracters, setting and problem. In the middle we learn about the events and at the end we find out the solution to the character's problem. We listended to the story 'Stephanie's Ponytail' by Robert Munsch, identified the parts and elements and sequenced them.

In gym, we had our last inline skating class. The students had a great time and showed real improvement since we began. They also worked on dribbling and passing in basketball.

We continue to learn about matter in science and the difference between materials and objects. We also began learning about the properties of materials such as the colour, size, shape, texture and whether an item is processed or natural. The students sorted items based on various properties and described a Mystery Object for their classmates to guess.

It was also Metis Week. We revisited our learning about who the Metis people are and looked at Metis Bead art. The students are learning to make a beaded flower in the "style" of Metis bead art.  Stay tuned to see how they turn out!

This Week in Room 21....

It was a short, but busy week! Take a look : )

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week we learned about Remembrance Day and why it is such an important day to recognize. The students did an excellent job practicing for their part in the performance and also did some writing. They wrote about peace and how they can help to make the world a peaceful place. They also wrote about why we commemorate Remembrance Day. We have been focusing on what makes a good sentence and also on elaborating on our ideas.

In math, we worked with the beaded number line to reinforce our understanding of place value and also to build our understanding of number lines. The students counted the number of beads on the line and used the beads to determine where different numbers would go. For example, if they wanted to locate the number 47 on the number line, they would count out 4 groups of ten beads and then count the extra 7 beads. This is an important skill and concept to develop. Students will be using this and other types of number lines to help them with adding, subtracting, skip counting and other math skills.

In science, we began talking about Matter. Following the steps in the Scientific Method we posed a question, hypothesized and tested our hypothesis to answer the question: What is matter? Students learned that matter is everywhere. We can see it, touch it, breath it-- everything including people-- is made of matter! They thought that was pretty cool : )  Then we looked at the difference between objects and materials. Students learned that objects are made of materials. They grouped pictures into a chart as either a material or an object.

Our assembly was beautiful. The kids did a wonderful job. They were so excited and nervous to perform but they all rose to the challenge!
