It was a short, but busy week! Take a look : )
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
This week we learned about Remembrance Day and why it is such an important day to recognize. The students did an excellent job practicing for their part in the performance and also did some writing. They wrote about peace and how they can help to make the world a peaceful place. They also wrote about why we commemorate Remembrance Day. We have been focusing on what makes a good sentence and also on elaborating on our ideas.
In math, we worked with the beaded number line to reinforce our understanding of place value and also to build our understanding of number lines. The students counted the number of beads on the line and used the beads to determine where different numbers would go. For example, if they wanted to locate the number 47 on the number line, they would count out 4 groups of ten beads and then count the extra 7 beads. This is an important skill and concept to develop. Students will be using this and other types of number lines to help them with adding, subtracting, skip counting and other math skills.
In science, we began talking about Matter. Following the steps in the Scientific Method we posed a question, hypothesized and tested our hypothesis to answer the question: What is matter? Students learned that matter is everywhere. We can see it, touch it, breath it-- everything including people-- is made of matter! They thought that was pretty cool : ) Then we looked at the difference between objects and materials. Students learned that objects are made of materials. They grouped pictures into a chart as either a material or an object.
Our assembly was beautiful. The kids did a wonderful job. They were so excited and nervous to perform but they all rose to the challenge!
