This week in Language Arts, students began taking a closer look at the features of fiction books. We learned that fiction stories have three main parts: a beginning, middle, and end. Students were also introduced to important story elements including characters, setting, events, and solution. To help build their understanding, students watched several short videos explaining the different parts and elements of a fiction story.   Video Link After listening to the classic story The Three Little Pigs , students worked together in small groups to identify and organize the story elements. They discussed the characters, setting, important events, and the solution to the problem in the story. Students then plotted these elements in the correct order under the beginning, middle, and end sections of the story. This activity encouraged teamwork, discussion, and deeper thinking about how stories are organized. In Math, we began discussing the concept of graphing. Students learned that graphs ...

Hello! It was another exciting week in Room 4. Take a peek at our learning below!  In ELAL, students learned about r-controlled vowels. We explored the vowel patterns ar, or, er, ir, and ur. Students practiced building and reading words containing these patterns, read stories featuring r-controlled vowels, and played a variety of games to strengthen their understanding of these important phonics concepts. In math, students focused on the concepts of equality and inequality. They learned that equality means “has the same as” and that inequality means two things are unequal. Using the visual of a balance scale, students compared amounts and practiced using equal and unequal signs. They also learned that amounts can be represented in different ways using numbers and equations. For example, students explored true equations such as 3 + 1 = 4, 3 + 1 = 2 + 2, 4 = 2 + 2, and 4 = 4. These activities helped students understand that equations can show equal amounts in multiple ways. Video Lin...

This week, students continued developing their research skills by learning how to take jot notes using non-fiction texts. We began by reviewing the features of non-fiction books, including headings, photographs, captions, labels, diagrams, and tables of contents. Students then worked collaboratively in small groups to research different topics related to foxes appearance and threats they face in the wild. Students practiced finding important information and recording it in short jot notes. Students also learned about compound words. They played a matching game to combine smaller words and create new compound words. Students then brainstormed and created some compound words of their own before completing an activity sheet where they matched words together to form new compound words. In math, we continued our study of patterns. Students learned how to identify mistakes in repeating patterns and explain how to correct them. They also practiced creating patterns that were “similar but diff...
