This week, students continued developing their research skills by learning how to take jot notes using non-fiction texts. We began by reviewing the features of non-fiction books, including headings, photographs, captions, labels, diagrams, and tables of contents. Students then worked collaboratively in small groups to research different topics related to foxes appearance and threats they face in the wild. Students practiced finding important information and recording it in short jot notes. Students also learned about compound words. They played a matching game to combine smaller words and create new compound words. Students then brainstormed and created some compound words of their own before completing an activity sheet where they matched words together to form new compound words. In math, we continued our study of patterns. Students learned how to identify mistakes in repeating patterns and explain how to correct them. They also practiced creating patterns that were “similar but diff...

Hello, families and students! We’ve had a fantastic week in our classroom. Keep reading to find out what we did! In Language Arts, we focused on the "ar" sound. We wrote words like “car” and “star,” read them together, and even built new words using these sounds—our reading skills are really growing! We also took a dive into informational writing. We are learning about foxes and recording our information using jot notes. The students learned how to create jot down notes by using just a few words or short phrases. This week we focused on finding information about their habitat and food.  We will continue to work on researching facts about foxes next week looking at their appearance, life cycle and enemies/threats. In math, we explored patterns and cycles that happen all around us in nature. We talked about the changing seasons—how spring, summer, fall, and winter come in a repeating cycle. We also looked at day and night, and even the phases of the moon. After that, the studen...

This week in ELA, students learned about “Y in Disguise!” We discovered that when the letter y comes at the end of a word, it can make the long /i/ sound (as in fly or my ) or the long /e/ sound (as in happy or funny ). Students practiced listening for these sounds, sorting words, and building words with this spelling pattern. We also worked on reading words with ending y sounds during our small group and whole class activities. To support our learning, we enjoyed reading several books from the Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold . Students loved following Fly Guy’s silly adventures while listening for words that contained the “Y in Disguise” spelling pattern. The stories gave us many opportunities to practice our decoding and fluency skills while enjoying lots of laughs together. In writing, we began exploring fiction and non-fiction text features . Students learned about the differences between fiction and non-fiction books and discussed ways we can tell them apart. Working in gr...
