Our Learning This Week...
Hello Families,
We had another busy and productive week in the classroom! Students were engaged in a variety of learning activities across subject areas and continued to build their skills in reading, math, science, and physical education. Here is a look at some of the learning that took place this week.
In literacy this week, students continued developing their phonics and reading skills by focusing on the /wh/, /ph/, and /ng/ sound patterns. We practiced identifying these sounds in words, reading them in sentences, and listening for them when reading aloud. Students explored examples such as /wh/ in when and whale, /ph/ in phone and elephant, and /ng/ in sing and long. Through reading activities, word work, and class discussions, students practiced recognizing these patterns and applying them while decoding new words. Strengthening phonics knowledge helps students become more confident and fluent readers.
In math, students worked on comparing unit fractions. We explored two important ideas:
-
Comparing unit fractions of the same whole (for example, comparing 1/2 and 1/4 of the same shape).
-
Comparing unit fractions of different wholes, where the size of the whole changes and affects the size of the fraction.
Students used drawings, visual models, and class discussions to determine which fractions were larger or smaller. These activities helped students understand that the size of a fraction depends not only on the number of parts but also on the size of the whole.
We also spent time reviewing how to solve word problems. Students practiced following a clear step-by-step process:
-
Locate the number words
-
Locate the clue words
-
Determine the correct operation (addition, subtraction, etc.)
-
Draw a picture to represent the problem
-
Write a math sentence
Using this process helps students slow down, think carefully about the problem, and organize their thinking before solving.
In science, students continued learning about sound energy and its characteristics. We focused on three key properties of sound:
-
Volume – how loud or soft a sound is
-
Pitch – how high or low a sound is
-
Duration – how long or short a sound lasts
Students watched and listened to videos featuring a variety of instruments, objects, and animals making different sounds. After listening carefully, they determined whether each sound was demonstrating pitch, volume, or duration.
Students also compared sounds and described whether they were:
-
Louder or softer
-
Higher or lower
-
Shorter or longer
To practice these concepts, students completed an activity sheet where they matched objects with their sounds by circling loud/soft, high/low, or short/long. This activity helped them apply what they had learned while thinking carefully about the qualities of different sounds.
This week students also had the opportunity to go swimming, and it was a fantastic experience for everyone! During the lesson, students practiced a variety of important water skills including blowing bubbles, putting their heads under the water, floating on their backs, jumping into the pool, rolling off the side, kicking with their feet, and treading water.
Students were encouraged to step outside of their comfort zone and try new skills. Many students showed great perseverance and bravery while practicing in the pool. Most importantly, they had a really fun time and learned a lot of new skills!
