Our Learning This Week...

Hello! It's hard to believe that it is already October! Where did the time go? Although this was a short week the students have been busy learning many things. Have a look!

This week students began working in their printing booklets. Each student was also given a 'Printing Pal' (sock puppet) to help them achieve and maintain proper pencil grip when writing. Students began by learning how to correctly write the letter /c/ also called 'Magic C'. Ours are not quite as fancy as this, but you get the idea : )

'Magic C' is a very important letter because it forms the basis of many other letters. If a student can properly form the letter /c/ they can use that to print many other letters such as /o/, /a/, /d/, /g/, q/ and /s/. Students also practiced starting their letters at the top. This is very important as it enables students to print more efficiently making writing tasks easier!

In math, students worked on a 'Counting Collections' activity. After reviewing how to count by 1s (Gr. 1) and 2s, 5s & 10s (Gr. 2), the students were given collections of items to count and record. Students learned that when counting we need to be organized and systematic so that we do not accidentally miss counting any items or count any objects twice. Students also learned that counting by 1s is not always the most efficient especially when counting larger groups of objects. Skip counting enables us to count larger collections accurately and efficiently.

In science, students continue to learn about the scientific method. Currently, they are focusing on making observations and asking questions. To practice these skills, students examined some giant sunflowers from Ms. Browne's garden! Students got to touch them, smell them and even taste some sunflower seeds--- yum! They also had a chance to use a magnifying glass to see the sunflowers up close and in detail. After that they did a detailed drawing of the sunflowers and wrote down some words to describe what they could see, smell, touch and taste.

In gym we began learning about bowling. The students had a blast knocking down pins and developed their  hand-eye coordination while doing so!

As you are aware, teachers will not be in schools starting next week. You will have received an email from the Calgary Board of Education regarding school closures, what to to expect and supports available from the AB Government at this time. Below is the correspondence in full.

The link below will also provide you with up-to-date information. Please bookmark this page so that you have access to the latest developments as they arise. It is our hope that this impasse will be short-lived and that we can be back in schools with students very soon!

NEW Gr. 2/3 CLASS

For students that will be moving to a new classroom when they return to school, I want to wish them the very best in their new class with their new teacher! It has been a privilege to get to know and to work with each one of them! We will ensure that their school supplies are brought to their new classroom so that everything is ready to go when they come back.
