Our Learning This Week...

It is hard to believe that the month of May is now passed. As we look foward with anticipation and excitement to the month of June, here's a look at our learning this past week : )

-------------------------------------------------------

In language arts students have continued to hone their elaboration skills learning a variety of new vocabulary words to use in their writing in place of more general or ordinary terms. Students listened to a video about 'triple scoop' words and brainstormed a list of words that can be used in place of more everyday words. For example, in place of the word 'big' students can use 'huge, enormous, gigantic, humungous, ginormous' to make their writing more interesting and engaging.

Students also learned about the different sounds for the /-ed/ suffix: -t, -d and -ed (-ud). Students watched a video explaining the different cues or clues that let us know when to use each sound. Students also worked in small groups to sort words by the type of /-ed/ sound in each and completed a sorting sheet to further reinforce their understanding.

In math, we finished off our unit on measurement with an outdoor scavenger hunt. Students were given a variety of measurement criteria and had to find examples to match that criteria around the school. For example, students were asked to find something that is taller than the flag pole, use blocks to find objects of a certain length or height and compare the distance between various objects on the playground.

In science, students continued to work on a Signs of Spring activity showing their understanding of what happens in the springtime.

They also continued to monitor and record the growth of their seeds noting any changes that they observed.

Lastly, students completed an activity on animals and their environments. Students selected an animal native to Alberta and illustrated the environment that the animal lives in. They then labelled examples of the food, shelter and water sources available in that environment to meet the needs of the animal.

In gym, students continued to learn about soccer. They focused on passing and shooting using proper form.
