This Week in Room 21....

Ho! Ho! Ho! Happy Friday! Here's a peek at our week : )

                    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We continue to practice for our Winter Concert on Tuesday, December 19. We are asking students to wear all white or a white shirt and black pants for their performance.  We are also asking them to wear a winter toque-- preferably white-- on Tuesday evening.

                         -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This week we read the story 'The Hat' by Jan Brett. The students did a 5 Finger Touch n' Tell with a partner being sure to include all the important elements from the story. Then they set to work sequencing pictures from the story and summarizing the story using proper sentence structure and details from the book. This is the first time students have had to do this completely independently.

In math, we have been learning about composing and decomposing numbers. This refers to being able to break numbers apart into smaller numbers and putting numbers together to make larger numbers. For example, 5 can be shown as 2+3 or 4+1 or even 1+1+1+1+1.

In science, students have learned about the properties of various materials. This week they had to use their knowledge of the characteristics of various materials to create an object. They could chose to build a tower, vase, stool or napkin holder. They had to consider the purpose of the object and what materials would be best to build it. For example, a vase should be waterproof so plastic or styrofoam would be the best materials to use.

In social, we looked at a timeline of Calgary's growth and changes. We discussed what is meant by past and present and began creating a page in our visual journals to show how Calgary has changed. The students also finished up their flip book about the prairie including information about the climate, weather, plants, animals and resources found on the prairie.

In gym, we have been working on some basic volleyball skills using balloons. The students practices passing the balloon to their partners and using different body parts to tap the balloon such as their finger, their elbow and even their head!

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
  • Healthy Hunger is up and running. Below are the upcoming fun lunch dates. To order please go to the Healthy Hunger website.

This Week in Room 21...

- IMPORTANT REMINDER -

The students had an exciting week shopping at the Winter Market and going to the Book Fair. We also worked on some art, did a number of science experiments and learned about the prairie environment as we prepare to learn about a prairie community-- Calgary now and in the past.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In writing we finished our summary of 'The Mitten' by Jan Brett. Students continue to work on using capitals at the beginning of their sentences, leaving spaces between words and using punctuation at the end of a sentence. Students also continue to develop their skill at using elaboration to add details to sentences and ensure that their sentences are in the correct order.

In math, we have been working on addition to 20 (Gr. 1) and addition of two-digit numbers to 100 (Gr. 2) using a variety of strategies (eg. ten frames, number paths, number lines). Students were challenged to not only solve typical two addend math problems (eg. 8 + 9 = __), but also problems with missing addends (eg. __ + 12 = 24 and 10 + __ = 13).

In art, we created some lovely pictures of the Northern Lights using chalk pastels. The students used an outline to create a silhouette of hills and the pastels to make the northern lights in the sky. They then added dots of white paint for the stars. They learned about blending and shading and what a silhouette is.

In gym, we continued to work on our hand-eye coordination using scoops and balls. The students played a fun game of "Get the Garbage Out" and also did some relay races with their scoops and balls.
