Our Learning This Week....

Hello families!
Take a look at some of the exciting learning that took place in our classroom this week.

English Language Arts & Literacy (ELAL)

This week, students continued to strengthen their writing skills by practicing complete sentences that include capital letters, periods, and proper spacing (“meatball spaces”). They are also working on adding more detail to their writing by aiming to write at least three sentences in their journals. In addition, students practiced stretching out words to listen for the first sound, last sound, and one middle sound when spelling, helping to improve spelling accuracy. As part of our writing, students shared their thoughts and ideas about Pink Shirt Day.

Mathematics

In math, we explored the concept of fractions of a set. Students learned that groups of objects can be represented as fractions. For example, if there are six cupcakes and five are chocolate while one is vanilla, then 5/6 of the cupcakes are chocolate and 1/6 are vanilla. Students also played a fun and engaging game called “Give Me Half.” They rolled a die and used counters to split the number evenly between themselves and a partner, reinforcing the idea of halves through hands-on learning.

Social Studies

In social studies, we continued building our understanding and appreciation of our own culture and the cultures of others. This week, students began learning about the Francophone community across Canada and within Alberta. We discussed some of the traditions, celebrations, and holidays recognized by French Canadians.

Science

Students experimented with various objects to determine if they roll, bounce, or slide. After testing each object, students drew pictures of objects in a table under the correct heading based on their results. Lastly, they completed some sentence frames selecting from a few options to explain why objects can roll, bounce or slide.

Physical Education

In gym class, we started a new skip rope unit. Students learned how to check that their skipping rope is the correct length and practiced timing their jumps to avoid getting tangled. Everyone showed great enthusiasm and perseverance as they tried a new skill.

Pink Shirt Day

This week also included our celebration of Pink Shirt Day. Students watched a short video explaining how and why Pink Shirt Day began. They listened to a story entitled, 'The Kindness Quilt', about kindness and inclusion, then decorated a paper shirt with pictures and ideas showing how they can be kind and help prevent bullying.
