Our Learning This Week...
In Language Arts, we listened to a variety of stories and practiced identifying important story elements. Students learned how to recognize the characters, setting, problem, and other key parts of a story. After each story, students reflected on what they had learned and recorded their thinking in their journals. This helped students strengthen both their reading comprehension and writing skills.
In Math, we continued our learning about graphs. This week, students explored how graphs can help us answer questions and draw conclusions. They practiced "reading" graphs by looking carefully at the information presented and determining what the data was telling them. Students worked on comparing quantities, identifying the most and least common responses, and using graph information to answer questions.
In Science, we learned about litter and pollution. Students discussed the difference between the two and explored how human actions can impact the environment. We talked about the 4Rs—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Repurpose—and discussed ways we can make environmentally responsible choices each day. To deepen their understanding, students participated in a playground litter clean-up. This hands-on activity helped them see the importance of taking care of our school grounds and community.
We also enjoyed a community walk to look for signs of summer. Although summer has not officially arrived, students noticed many changes in the environment. They observed that trees have many more leaves than they did earlier in the spring, some baby animals have grown bigger, and there are more flowers blooming and insects buzzing around. It was a wonderful opportunity to observe seasonal changes and connect our learning to the world around us.
We also continued to observe and learn about our caterpillars. They have now all formed their chrysalises and are resting safely inside our butterfly enclosure. Students are eagerly anticipating the moment they emerge as butterflies! Through this ongoing inquiry, students are developing their observation skills and practicing how to record their findings through detailed scientific drawings.
In gym, we began learning how to play kickball. Students learned that kickball is similar to baseball, but instead of hitting a ball with a bat, players kick the ball. We practiced kicking the ball and then running to the bases. Many students also had an opportunity to be the pitcher and roll the ball to the batter (or kicker). Learning the rules and positions was a little tricky at first, but students are beginning to understand the game and are gaining confidence with each class.
