Hello, families and students! We’ve had a fantastic week in our classroom. Keep reading to find out what we did!
In Language Arts, we focused on the "ar" sound. We wrote words like “car” and “star,” read them together, and even built new words using these sounds—our reading skills are really growing! We also took a dive into informational writing. We are learning about foxes and recording our information using jot notes. The students learned how to create jot down notes by using just a few words or short phrases. This week we focused on finding information about their habitat and food. We will continue to work on researching facts about foxes next week looking at their appearance, life cycle and enemies/threats.

In math, we explored patterns and cycles that happen all around us in nature. We talked about the changing seasons—how spring, summer, fall, and winter come in a repeating cycle. We also looked at day and night, and even the phases of the moon. After that, the students thought about their own daily cycles—like waking up, going to school, after school activities, and heading to bed. They even drew pictures of their daily routines to show how patterns occur in their own lives.

The students in grade two also worked hard on identifying number patterns. They explored the hundreds chart, spotting patterns as numbers grew. They looked for sequences, like counting by twos, fours, fives, and tens, noticing how numbers grow in predictable ways.

Another fun activity was creating name pattern art. Each student wrote their name in a chart over and over and then colored each letter, creating a repeating pattern. These visual patterns helped them see how sequences appear in different ways—just like in numbers!

In science this week, we dove into the amazing environments of Alberta! The students learned that Alberta has five main environments: mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, and prairies. They brainstormed the types of animals that live in each environment and discussed how these special places provide food, water, shelter etc. for the animals. After that, each student chose one environment and picked an animal that lives there. They drew pictures of their chosen environment and labeled how the environment helps their animal meet its needs.

In social studies, the students completed the creation of our very own classroom community. Each student was assigned a building or service to draw—examples included a library, a hospital, a school, a car repair shop, and a restaurant. Once everyone finished, we added roads, signs, and other key elements of a community to create a big display on the wall. Next, the students will label each drawing as either a good or a service—this is helping them understand how different parts of a community work together to meet everyone’s needs.

We also had a special guest, Sandra Manyfeathers, an Elder from Tsu'tina Nation, visited us to share her wisdom and stories about First Nations and Blackfoot culture. She taught the children traditional songs and played games that Blackfoot children would have enjoyed long ago. Through these songs and games, the students learned important aspects of Blackfoot culture and everyday life. We are so grateful to Sandra for joining us and helping us deepen our understanding of these rich traditions.
Last but not least the students worked on creating a beaded flower for Mother's Day. They also brought home a marigold plant which you can hopefully plant in your garden at home that will bloom after a few weeks. We want to say a big thank to our mom's for all they do! Happy Mother's Day!
