Our Learning This Week...

Hello Families! Happy Friday! Welcome to the first of our many blog posts for the year! Here you will find highlights from our week, upcoming events, important reminders, links to videos and activities and more. This week I have posted some photos from both our first and second weeks of school. Enjoy!

In langauge arts, students have explored the parts of a sentence including capitals, periods and spaces. They have also learned that sentences have two parts-- a naming part (subject) and telling part (predicate). Students have also been learning about the parts of speech beginning with nouns. Through videos, songs and games students have been practicing identifying nouns as either a person, place or thing.

In math, students have been working on recognizing and naming numbers to 20 in grade 1 and into the 100s in grade 2. Students have practiced counting, writing and building numbers using base ten blocks.

We have also begun discussing graphs-- what they are, why and how we use them. We have made graphs about how we felt on the first day of school, a birthday graph and a graph of the communities that we live in.

In social studies, students began learning about Indigenous Peoples. They watched some videos explaining who the Indigenous people of Canada are and sorted pictures into the correct group (i.e. First Nations, Metis and Inuit).

In science, students talked about what a scientist is and what they do. They then examined the steps in the scientific method.

In gym, the students have been exploring different ways of moving in spaces such as skipping, hopping, running, shuffling, and galloping. They also played some fun tag games and learned about safety and fair play.

In health, students have been learning about cooperating, listening and teamwork. They completed a fun challenge in which they worked in small groups to stack cups without touching them!

Terry Fox Run

Ethel M. Johnson school is participating in the 45th Terry Fox Run on Friday, September 19th on our school field from 9-9:30am.

One of the goals of observing the life of Terry Fox and participating in this Canada-wide event is to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation.  The run demonstrates generosity and determination of those who participate in it.  ‘Toonies for Terry’ will be collected in student classrooms during the week of September 15-19th, as well donations are accepted on-line at https://schools.terryfox.ca/EthelMJohnson

On the day of our run, please remember to dress for the weather, wear comfortable running shoes and each student is also encouraged to wear their EMJ T-shirts or their color groups color.  Finally, a big thank you to The School Council who kindly donated a snack for the students after our Terry Fox Run!
