Our Learning This Week...

Hello Families! Happy 3rd Week of School : )  We had a great week. Here's what we have been up to!

In language arts we read the book, Someday, by Eileen Spinelli. After reading, we shared our own dreams for the future. The students were very thoughtful about what they wanted to be or do when they grow up. Following our sharing time the students wrote their dream for the future down on a cloud which became part of an art project and class display.

Students have also continued to learn about the parts of a sentence and various parts of speech. This week we focused on verbs. Students learned that there are two kinds of verbs-- action verbs and being verbs. We focused on action verbs. Students had fun playing Charades acting out different verbs and getting the class to guess what their action was.

In math, students continued to develop their understanding of place value and how to use base ten blocks to build numbers into the double-digits (Gr. 1) and triple-digits (Gr. 2). They also played a fun game called "Place Value Path" which is kind of like Bingo with a bit of a twist. They had a great time and developed their understanding of tens, ones and hundreds at the same time!

In art, students used lines, shapes and colours to create hot air balloon art that reflected each student's unique style. They first drew their design, then coloured and finally outlined their work to make it really stand out. These are now displayed in the hall on our bulletin board along with the writing they did about their dreams.

This week was also our Terry Fox Run. After learning a bit about Terry-- who he was, what happened to him and why he wanted to run across Canada-- the students spent time "training' for our run during gym. They showed real persistence and determination to run as many laps as they could and had a fabulous time participating in the run on Friday. After they were done, School Council treated the whole school to a special treat. Students are welcome to continue to bring in Toonies for Terry next week.
