Our Learning This Week...
This week in Language Arts, students began taking a closer look at the features of fiction books. We learned that fiction stories have three main parts: a beginning, middle, and end. Students were also introduced to important story elements including characters, setting, events, and solution. To help build their understanding, students watched several short videos explaining the different parts and elements of a fiction story.
In Math, we began discussing the concept of graphing. Students learned that graphs contain numbers represented in the form of data and that graphs have several important parts, including a title and choices/categories. Students worked with a partner to build a concrete graph using books. First, they sorted the books into two or three groups based on a chosen criteria such as colour, type of book, or another noticeable feature. They then arranged the books so they could easily compare the groups and determine which had the most, least, or the same amount without counting each item individually.
In Science, students learned about the life cycles of animals. We examined and discussed several different animal life cycles before focusing on the life cycle of a butterfly. Students worked on sequencing the stages of the butterfly life cycle in the correct order. They also completed their first observation of our classroom caterpillars. Students carefully drew and coloured a picture of the caterpillar and labelled it using important science vocabulary words.
In Social Studies, students participated in our Class Market! Students had the opportunity to role play being both buyers and sellers. Half of the class began as sellers while the other half were buyers, and partway through the activity they switched roles. We had an important discussion about whether we should spend most of our money on the things we want or the things we need. After the activity, students discussed how buyers and sellers help people in a community meet their needs and wants. We also compared buying and selling to trading to see how they are similar and different. Students concluded that both systems can help people meet their needs and wants, but buying and selling is often easier because we do not have to guess what something is worth.
In Gym, students continued to refine their soccer skills while playing a fun game called 4 Corner Soccer. Ask your child to explain how to play!
