Our Learning This Week....

This week, students continued developing their research skills by learning how to take jot notes using non-fiction texts. We began by reviewing the features of non-fiction books, including headings, photographs, captions, labels, diagrams, and tables of contents. Students then worked collaboratively in small groups to research different topics related to foxes appearance and threats they face in the wild. Students practiced finding important information and recording it in short jot notes.

Students also learned about compound words. They played a matching game to combine smaller words and create new compound words. Students then brainstormed and created some compound words of their own before completing an activity sheet where they matched words together to form new compound words.

In math, we continued our study of patterns. Students learned how to identify mistakes in repeating patterns and explain how to correct them. They also practiced creating patterns that were “similar but different,” which encouraged them to think carefully about pattern rules and how patterns can change while still following a consistent sequence. Students also played a matching game in which they had to match patterns that both followed the same pattern sequence (e.g. ABAB, ABC, ABCD etc) but used different objects. For example, the pattern 121212.. matched with the pattern sun, moon, sun, moon.

Students are also continuing to build greater fluency with basic math facts. Each day, students work with partners to orally answer math facts within a two-minute time period. As students successfully complete o set of facts, they move on to the next level. This week students focused on subtracting with 0, 1 and 2.

In social studies, students learned about leaders in a community. They listened to the book Duck for President and brainstormed the qualities of a good leader. Together, we created a list of different leaders and helpers in a community and discussed the important ways they help others. Students then selected one community leader or helper to write and draw about in their Visual Journals.

In science, students continued learning about living systems. They explored different ways that plants and animals help people meet their needs. Students drew and labeled pictures of two plants and two animals and explained what needs they help people meet, such as food, clothing, shelter, or transportation.

In gym, students continued developing their soccer skills. They practiced dribbling the ball with control and learned how to pass accurately to a partner. Students worked hard to demonstrate teamwork, listening skills, and good sportsmanship during activities and games.
