Our Learning This Week...

This week in ELA, students learned about “Y in Disguise!” We discovered that when the letter y comes at the end of a word, it can make the long /i/ sound (as in fly or my) or the long /e/ sound (as in happy or funny). Students practiced listening for these sounds, sorting words, and building words with this spelling pattern. We also worked on reading words with ending y sounds during our small group and whole class activities.

To support our learning, we enjoyed reading several books from the Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold. Students loved following Fly Guy’s silly adventures while listening for words that contained the “Y in Disguise” spelling pattern. The stories gave us many opportunities to practice our decoding and fluency skills while enjoying lots of laughs together.

In writing, we began exploring fiction and non-fiction text features. Students learned about the differences between fiction and non-fiction books and discussed ways we can tell them apart. Working in groups, students matched pictures of text features to the correct vocabulary terms. They then completed a scavenger hunt using informational books about animals, searching for features such as maps, tables of contents, glossaries, captions, and bold print. Students carefully looked through their books and recorded the page number where they found each feature.

In math, students learned about growing (increasing) patterns. We began the unit by reading the book Rooster's Off to See the World by Eric Carle. In the story, a rooster goes on an adventure and meets many different animals along the way. Each time he meets a new group of animals, there is one more animal than in the previous group. For example, he meets 2 cats, then 3 frogs, 4 turtles, and 5 fish. Students discussed how the story showed a growing pattern.

Using coloured tiles, students then built different growing patterns and identified how much the pattern increased each time. They also practiced illustrating growing patterns in their math journals and explaining the pattern rules using words and numbers.

In social studies, we began learning about where goods come from. Students discovered that all goods are produced from natural resources. We matched everyday products to the natural resources they come from and completed an activity showing the steps from resource to finished product.

In gym, students had a great time working through an obstacle course that allowed them to practice the skills they learned during our gymnastics unit. They balanced, climbed, rolled, and moved safely through each station while demonstrating excellent effort.
