Our Learning This Week...
We had a full and engaging week of learning in our classroom! Here's a peek at our week!
In English Language Arts, students learned about the three sounds of /ed/. They discovered that we add /ed/ to words to show past tense, meaning something has already happened. We practiced using the three sounds:
- /d/ after a voiced sound
- /t/ after an unvoiced sound
- /id/ after the letters t and d
Students worked on listening closely to determine which ending sound to use.
In writing, we focused on friendly letters. Students learned why we write them, who we might send them to, and how to properly format them. This connected perfectly with Support Staff Appreciation Week. Students wrote thoughtful letters to members of our school community, including lunchroom supervisors, educational assistants, our secretary, and our custodian, to express appreciation for all they do.
In math, we began exploring patterns. Students learned how to build, describe, and label patterns using letters (such as AB, ABC, and ABCD). We also worked on identifying the core of a pattern and determining how many terms are in the core. Students created patterns using colours, shapes, sizes, and orientations, and practiced extending patterns by identifying what comes next.
In science, we examined the needs of plants and animals, including food, water, air, light, and space or shelter. To deepen their understanding, students participated in a fun trading game where they had to collect all the necessary needs for their plant to survive.
In social studies, students continued learning about goods and services. They worked in their booklets to identify examples of goods and services at home, at school, and in the community.
In gym, students rotated through a variety of gymnastics stations. They climbed ropes, balanced on beams, explored ladders, used crash mats and box horses, and practiced hanging from bars. They also continued developing their skills on mats, including different ways of traveling and performing balances and bridges.
On Thursday, we went on a field trip to Heritage Park. Students learned about life in Calgary in the past, focusing on how communities meet their needs, the roles people play, and how communities grow and change over time. It was a wonderful hands-on learning experience.
