Our Learning This Week...
It has been a week full of learning and exploration! Keep reading to learn all about what we have been up to : )
In reading, students continued exploring the silent e spelling pattern and how it makes the vowel “say its name.” They built words using letter tiles and practiced reading decodable texts featuring long e sounds. It has been great to see students growing more confident in recognizing and reading these patterns.
In writing, we focused on journal entries about our Spring Break experiences and our exciting trip to TELUS Spark Science Centre. Students are continuing to strengthen their understanding of complete sentences by using capital letters, periods, and proper spacing. They are also being encouraged to expand their ideas by writing longer, more detailed pieces, using a variety of sentence starters. Many students are now working toward writing at least four sentences on a topic—great progress!
In science, we began our new unit on computer science by asking the question, “What is computer science?” Students shared thoughtful ideas and then watched a video to deepen their understanding. We learned that computer science is about how computers work and how we communicate with them. This led to a discussion about the importance of clear instructions. Students discovered that when we give instructions to computers, it is called coding. Students worked on creating a original tag game that used creativity and clear instructions.
Our visit to TELUS Spark Science Centre was definitely the highlight of the week! Students had an amazing time exploring interactive exhibits, watching a movie in the Dome Theatre, and engaging with activities involving water, electronics, and virtual reality. They also had the opportunity to build a small LEGO robot with a motor and learned how to code it to perform different actions—an exciting real-world connection to our classroom learning. A big thank you to our parent volunteers who made this memorable experience possible!
In math, students continued their learning about measurement. This week, they focused on the concepts of height and depth. Using cubes, students measured and compared the height and depth of different objects, helping them develop a stronger understanding of measurement in a hands-on way.
Finally, in art, students explored the element of line. They created Easter-themed artwork using a variety of lines. Next week we will add colour using water colour pencil crayons.
