Our Learning This Week...

Hello! We had an amazing week. Take a peek!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

In language arts, students continued to work on story retellings using loose parts. They also started to created their own fractured fairy tale and tell it using loose parts. Students learned that in a retelling or story telling there are important details that need to be included such as:

  • important details (characters, setting, problem, events, solution)
  • events are in order
  • transition words (first, then, next)
  • an interesting beginning
  • sounds effects
  • voices for the characters

Students also began a new round of fine motor and literacy stations to support the development of their printing and cutting skills and to reinforce concepts learned in class such as compound words, short and long vowel sounds, parts of speech (nouns/verbs/adjectives) and more.

(I can't get photo to load right now. I'll try again later.)

In math, students have finished learning about patterns. Students had fun playing a fraction action game with a partner in which they had to roll a die and either colour in 1/2 a shape, 1 whole shape or erase one of their shapes if they rolled the unhappy face. Students will be having a pattern check-in on Monday. Please take some time to review the concepts below over the weekend. I have put pictcures of the various skills below.

  • What is a pattern? What is not a pattern? (a pattern repeats)
  • What is the core of a pattern? (xoxoxo - the core is: xo)
  • What are pattern terms? (eg. core = xo; number of terms = 2)
  • How do we label patterns? (AB, ABB, AAB, ABC, ABCD, ABBC etc.)
  • Tell what comes next in a pattern. (e.g. xoxox... the next term would be 'o')
  • Fix mistakes in patterns (wrong term or missing term)
  • Describe a pattern cycle. (e.g. day/night, seasons etc.)

In science, we began learning about living systems. The students determined that if something is living it is alive. It can grow and it needs food, air, water, sunlight and a place to live or grow. They compared plants and animals to determine how they are the same and how they are different. For example, animals can move, but plants cannot.

In gym, students participated in the ever popular Mission Impossible obstacle course to finish off our gymnastics unit. They had a great time challenging themselves to navigate through the course without stepping on the hot lava (floor) or knocking over any booby traps (bowling pins, balls etc.) or accidentally touching any equipment they weren't supposed to (e.g. skipping ropes, bean bags) and other items meant to make their mission more difficult!

On Friday, we got together with our Buddy class and went outside for a Community Walk. The students used their 5 Senses to record what they saw on their walk and did an observational drawing of an item of their choice such as a tree, rock, bush etc.
