Our Learning This Week....
Here's a look at our week : )
---------------------------------------------------
In language arts, students began learning how to do a retelling using loose parts. They sat in a circle and built their setting using a variety of small items to be the characters, buildings, plants, animals, and other objects in the story. Then we took turns retelling a different part of the story. Today we did a retelling of 'Jack and the Beanstalk'. Students were guided to do their retelling as if they were actually telling the story and to use words and phrases from the book to make their retelling more interesting. For example, when talking about the giant wanting to eat Jack they included the 'Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum! I smell the blood of an Englishman!" line in their retelling. Ms. V even tried to used some funny voices to be the different characters.
In math, we continued talking about patterns. Students learned about pattern cycles in our environment such as the seasons, day/night, months of the year and the lifecycle of a plant. They also found cyclic patterns in their own lives such as their daily schedule. Students also began learning about translating a pattern or showing the same pattern in different ways. For example, the patterns '122122' and '877877' are the same type of pattern because the both follow the 'ABB' pattern sequence.
We also started learning our Doubles Facts. These are basic addition problems in which one number is added to itself. For example, 1+1=2 etc. We are learning our doubles facts up to 10+10. The students have been listening to a fun Doubles Rap song and played the 'Double It' math game.

In science we talked about Earth Day and how we can help to take care of the earth. We listened to the story 'Walking Together' and discussed ways to protect the earth such as not littering, only using what we need and keeping the water clean.
In gym, students continued to practice refining their gymnastics skills as they rotated through the various stations. I have been so impressed with their hard work and the growth in their skills. They are able to properly and safely use a trestle, demonstrate many different kinds of movements such as rolls and animals movements and use various kinds of equipment in creative ways. I was also very impressed with how well many students used the climbing rope and climbing ladder showing excellent core strength!
Important Updates & Reminders:
Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!
Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. If you need your child's email or password information let me know. I can resend it.
