Our Learning This Week....
Happy Friday! Here's what we've been up to!
---------------------------------------------------------
In language arts, students have continued learning about different letter sounds. They listened for words in stories with the target sounds of /s/ and /m/, sorted picture cards based on the beginning sounds and completed some activity sheets. They also began working through some fine motor stations to build their muscle strength and pincer grasp. This will assist students as they continue to develop and refine their printing skills.
In math, students have begun to work on building and recognizing numbers to 20 quickly and accurately. They used ten frames to build teen numbers and explored the idea that teen numbers are composed of a ten and ____ more. For example, 13 would be a 10 and 3 more.
In science, students were asked "What is a scientist?". They brainstormed their own ideas and then listened to scientists describe what they do. The students then drew a picture showing what they think a scientist looks like and some of the tool a scientist would use such as a microscope, test tubes etc.
Fall is just around the corner, so we also began to explore the seasons. Why do we have seasons in the first place? Students learned that seasons are due to the orbit and the tilt of the earth. They completed a diagram of the earth marking the seasons for each point in its orbit.
In gym, the students have had a fun week of playing Ga-ga Ball and a variety of tag games. We have also been focused on developing our gross motor movement skills (e.g. skipping, running etc.) especially galloping. This takes a high degree of coordination and can be quite tricky for kids. We will continue with this next week.
Thanks again to all the parents that came in for our 'Open House' yesterday. It was great to see everyone. The kids enjoyed showing parents their Visual Journals, writing and math journals and their Dandelion Wish Art. If you did not get to come in, but would like a chance to meet with me, let me know and we can set up a time. (Sorry, but the photo of their art won't load. Below is a picture of a similar art activity).
Ethel M. Johnson school is participating in the Terry Fox Run on Thursday, September 26th on our school field from 9-9:30am.
One of the goals of observing the life of Terry Fox and participating in this Canada-wide event is to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. The run demonstrates generosity and determination of those who participate in it. ‘Toonies for Terry’ will be collected in student classrooms during the week of September 23-26th, as well donations are accepted on-line at https://schools.terryfox.ca/EthelMJohnson.
On the day of our run, please remember to dress for the weather, wear comfortable running shoes and each student is also encouraged to wear their Orange Shirt to recognize National Truth and Reconciliation Day, which is on September 30th. Finally, a big thank you to The School Council who kindly donated a healthy snack for the students after our Terry Fox Run!
