Our Learning This Week...
Hey Everyone! Take a look at our learning this week : )
In ELAL we have continued to learn about visualizing and how it can help us to better understand what we are reading. The students did a whole group visualizing activity in which some volunteers came up to the whiteboard and drew what they were imagining while listening to the story "In the Small, Small Pond'. After they drew their picture they talked about what they drew and the class also contributed some details that they envisioned. Students were also challenged to add a few key words that stood out to them from the story. Seeing what other students are visualizing helps students to expand their own drawings to include more details.
In math, students learned about the concepts of symmetry and how to sort 2D shapes based on their attributes. An attribute is a characteristic of a shape such as the number of sides/corners, size, colour, thickness, shape etc. Symmtery refers to something that is the same on both sides like a mirror image. For example, if you draw a line down the middle of an object or shape both sides would be identical to each other. Students practiced creating designs with pattern blocks and then having their partner build the other side to match.
In science, students designed and constructed a small boat using a variety of materials. They had to build a boat that was both strong and waterproof. Students then tested their creations to see if they used the correct materials to ensure that it could carry a heavy load and stay dry.
In health, students listened to a story entitled, 'My Mouth is a Volcano'. This is a story about a little boy who just has so many things to say, but really has a hard time knowling when it is okay to say all the things he is thinking. The students brainstormed when it is okay to blurt something (e.g. someone is hurt and needs help) versus when it is not okay and learned some strategies to help them wait rather than interrupt.
We ended the week with a visit from our buddies again. Students played some fun math games to sharpen their skills in addition, subtraction, place value and more.
