Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday! Here's a peek at our week : ) 


In ELAL students have been working on developing their visualization skills. Students have learned that visualizing isn't just about seeing pictures in our head but involved all 5 of our senses. When we visualize we also think about the sounds we hear, what we feel (textures, temperature, feelings) and even what we might taste. We also draw on our previous experiences and knowledge to help us more fully visualize the text we are listening to. Students listened to a description of a lollipop. They visualized the size of the lollipop, its shape, colour, flavour and more. Then they shared their descriptions with the class. Being able to visualize while reading and listening to stories is an important skill to develop good comprehension of text. 




In math, we began a new unit on geometry. The students brainstormed different shapes that they know then we listened to a story entitled "The Greedy Triangle". In this story, a triangle gets bored of being... a triangle! He keeps asking for one more side so he can change into different shapes. First he becomes a square, then a pentagon, hexagon etc. Finally he has so many sides he is a circle and he can't control where he's going. He decides he wants to be a triangle again. 




Students also went on a shape hunt, built shapes on geoboards, played a fun barrier game in which they had to give their partner instructions for a shape and check to see if they both made the same one and drew and labelled shapes in their journals. 







In social studies, we continued to learn about various landmarks and regions of Canada. Students learned about McMahon Stadium and the Arctic Lowlands. Ask your child what they learned about each of these topics and why makes them special.

In gym, we finished off a unit on floor hockey. The students continued to develop their skills in passing, stick handling, and shooting. They also played a short "game" (3-on-3)-- with Mrs. V refereeing-- to finish off the week. The students have done a great job learning how to hold their sticks properly and safely!

It is hard to believe that the month of May is now passed. As we look foward with anticipation and excitement to the month of June, here's a look at our learning this past week : )  ------------------------------------------------------- In language arts students have continued to hone their elaboration skills learning a variety of new vocabulary words to use in their writing in place of more general or ordinary terms. Students listened to a video about 'triple scoop' words and brainstormed a list of words that can be used in place of more everyday words. For example, in place of the word 'big' students can use 'huge, enormous, gigantic, humungous, ginormous' to make their writing more interesting and engaging.  Students also learned about the different sounds for the /-ed/ suffix: -t, -d and -ed (-ud). Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary. Our Learning This Week...

Hello! Happy Friday : ) I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Here's what we have been up to. -------------------------------------- In language arts we are learning about the parts and elements of stories. Students listened to, read and discussed several stories identifying the various story elements (character, setting, events, problem and solution). After reading and retelling each story the students then worked on sequencing and organizing the various elements into the proper part of the story (i.e. beginning, middle or end).   In math, students began a new unit on patterns and sorting. They began by learning about the different attributes of objects such as size, shape and colour. Then they practiced sorting various objects using different criteria or characteristics.  In social, students began presenting their traditions to their classmates.
