Our Learning This Week...

Hello Friends! Happy New Year and Happy first week back! I hope you all had a lovely break. The students have been excited to be back and busy learning. Here's a peek at what we have been up to.


In ELAL, the students began working on developing their visualization skills. Visualization is an important skill that enables students to better understand what they are reading. They listented to a story entitled 'Napi and the Rock' and as they listened they drew pictures of what they seeing in their head. This story is a Blackfoot legend about the Big Rock erratic in Okotokes, Alberta. The students were stunned when they saw how big this rock really is compared to how they envisioned when we were reading.

 

 



In math, students finished learning about a number of addition and subtraction strategies and completed a short assessment  showing their ability to use the strategies we have learned to solve math equations with sums and differences to 20. The students in grade two continued to learn about adding and subtracting two digit numbers with and without regrouping. The students in grade two continued to learn about adding and subtracting two digit numbers with and without regrouping. 







In social studies, we explored another region of Canada, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Lowlands examining the features and resources of this part of Canada. We learned that this area of Canada has a population of about 20 million people which is almost half of the entire population of Canada! We also learned that this area has many important resources such as minerals, hydroelectricity and fertile land for growing many important crops. The grade ones continued to learn about important landmarks in and around Calgary. This week they looked at the Rocky Mountains.




In gym, students began to learn about floor hockey. They practiced how to properly hold a stick, stick handle, pass a puck and shoot on net. 





We ended the week with a visit from our Buddy class. The students worked on a directed drawing of the mountains showing perspective (distance) and shading (light and shadow) which are important elements of drawing.

It is hard to believe that the month of May is now passed. As we look foward with anticipation and excitement to the month of June, here's a look at our learning this past week : )  ------------------------------------------------------- In language arts students have continued to hone their elaboration skills learning a variety of new vocabulary words to use in their writing in place of more general or ordinary terms. Students listened to a video about 'triple scoop' words and brainstormed a list of words that can be used in place of more everyday words. For example, in place of the word 'big' students can use 'huge, enormous, gigantic, humungous, ginormous' to make their writing more interesting and engaging.  Students also learned about the different sounds for the /-ed/ suffix: -t, -d and -ed (-ud). Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary. Our Learning This Week...

Hello! Happy Friday : ) I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Here's what we have been up to. -------------------------------------- In language arts we are learning about the parts and elements of stories. Students listened to, read and discussed several stories identifying the various story elements (character, setting, events, problem and solution). After reading and retelling each story the students then worked on sequencing and organizing the various elements into the proper part of the story (i.e. beginning, middle or end).   In math, students began a new unit on patterns and sorting. They began by learning about the different attributes of objects such as size, shape and colour. Then they practiced sorting various objects using different criteria or characteristics.  In social, students began presenting their traditions to their classmates.
