Our Learning This Week...

Here's a peek at our week! ------------------------------------- In ELAL we have been learning about long vowel sounds and the "Magic e" (a.k.a. silent e). Students learned that when a word has the CVCe spelling pattern the vowel will say it's name. For example, lake, late, sane, tame etc. Below is a short video that helps to explain this concept. They also listened to the story of the "Mighty Silent E".  https://youtu.be/c3oA4wfUBak In writing, we have been learning about the importance of organizing our ideas in a logical sequence. Students listened to stories and retold the story events in the correct order. The also worked in groups to order picture cards in a logical sequence and then one their own.  In math, we have been working on the making ten strategy for addition. Students played games in which they tried to spin two numbers that equal 10. Knowing pairs of numbers that add to ten can help students to solve problems like 9+6 or 8+7 by simply adding...

Happy Friday! What a week! Canada won... the cold is done... I'm ready for spring : )  Here's a peek at our week! --------------------------------- This week we learned about the /ng/ sound. Below is a video reviewing the sound these letters make and some of the words that contain this spelling and sound pattern. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhMk_o1Iu9Y In writing we began learning about planning before beginning to write. Students brainstormed their ideas and then numbered them in the order they thought was most logical. We also completed a fun writing activity for 100th Day. The students had to complete some sentence starters such as "I wish I had 100..." and "I wouldn't want 100...". They had a fun time sharing their answers to these questions and everyone had lots of laughs!     In math we continued learning about the counting on strategy and played a fun game called SUMS. Students were given two dice. One die had numbers on it and the other had ...

Hello! It was a short week. Here's what we did! --------------------------------------- In reading we learned the /ph/ and /ng/ sounds. Students played games, listened to stories and practiced making words with these letters in them. Here are some videos to help them review these sounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zzq9wy6wXI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhMk_o1Iu9Y In writing we continued with learning how to stretch our sentences with some hilarious results! Students continued to develop their understanding of sentence structure (subject i.e. the naming part and predicate i.e. the telling part). Then they added a 'where', a 'when' and a 'why' to their sentence. For example, "She likes pizza." became " She likes cheese pizza in the park every morning for breakfast ." We coloured coded our sentences to help us remember to include each part.  In math, we continued to learn about addition and subtraction. We focused on the addi...

Hello Everyone! It's getting a bit warmer out. Let's hope it lasts : )  Keep reading to see what we have been up to! ----------------------- This week we learned the /wh/ sound. This is a tricky sound as it sounds very much like the /w/ sound. The /wh/ sound has a bit more air in it than the /w/ sound. To decide if a word starts with /w/ or /wh/ we put our hand in front of our mouth as we say the word. If we feel a little or no air it probably starts with a /w/. If we feel a lot of air it probably starts with a /wh/.  In math, we continued to explore the concepts of addition and subtraction. Students know that when we add we are getting more and when we subtract we are getting less. Students worked through some problems to add and subtract 1 or 2 more/less from a given amount. They were also challenged to find two numbers that if we add 1 to one number and take one (subtract) from the other number we end up with the same number. This was a bit of a brain bender as students tri...
