Our Learning This Week...
Hello Everyone! It's getting a bit warmer out. Let's hope it lasts : ) Keep reading to see what we have been up to!
-----------------------
This week we learned the /wh/ sound. This is a tricky sound as it sounds very much like the /w/ sound. The /wh/ sound has a bit more air in it than the /w/ sound. To decide if a word starts with /w/ or /wh/ we put our hand in front of our mouth as we say the word. If we feel a little or no air it probably starts with a /w/. If we feel a lot of air it probably starts with a /wh/.
In math, we continued to explore the concepts of addition and subtraction. Students know that when we add we are getting more and when we subtract we are getting less. Students worked through some problems to add and subtract 1 or 2 more/less from a given amount. They were also challenged to find two numbers that if we add 1 to one number and take one (subtract) from the other number we end up with the same number. This was a bit of a brain bender as students tried many numbers before realizing that they could not be too close or too far apart.
In social we began learning about how Calgary has grown and changed over time. Students learned the terms past and present and what they mean. We watched a powerpoint showing how Calgary has changed. They students began working on creating a page in the visual journal to illustrate the changes they observed.
In Science, we completed a final project in following instructions. Students had to follow visual, verbal and written instructions to correctly complete a treasure map. Students drew objects with pencil and some objects using white pastel. After they finished they painted over their picture to reveal where the white pastel marks were and to see if they had put them in the correct place.
In gym, we have been learning how to stack cups. The students have to learn to use alternating hand to quickly stack and unstack the cups. So far we had practiced with one stack of 3 cups and two stacks of 3 cups. Students have raced each other and Mrs.V to see how quickly they can do it.
Important Updates & Reminders:
Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!
Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. If you need your child's email or password information let me know. I can resend it.
