Our Learning This Week....
Happy Friday! What a week! Canada won... the cold is done... I'm ready for spring : ) Here's a peek at our week!
---------------------------------
This week we learned about the /ng/ sound. Below is a video reviewing the sound these letters make and some of the words that contain this spelling and sound pattern.

In writing we began learning about planning before beginning to write. Students brainstormed their ideas and then numbered them in the order they thought was most logical. We also completed a fun writing activity for 100th Day. The students had to complete some sentence starters such as "I wish I had 100..." and "I wouldn't want 100...". They had a fun time sharing their answers to these questions and everyone had lots of laughs!
In math we continued learning about the counting on strategy and played a fun game called SUMS. Students were given two dice. One die had numbers on it and the other had dots. Students rolled both dice. Starting with the number shown on the first die (eg. 5) students then used the counting on strategy to add that number to the number on the second dice (eg. 4 dots). So, 5 and 4 more would be 9.
We also began a new math routine called Splat! This is another activity to build students skills in solving addition questions using the counting on strategy. Students are shown some dots. Then some of the dots are covered with a splat. Students must then figure out how many dots are under the splat.
In social we began learning about the N.W.M.P. and the role they played in Calgary's history. Students creates a Wanted Poster outlining the requirements to become a N.W.M.P. officer and their duties.
This week we also celebrated the 100th day of school. The students listened to a story about the 100th Day, completed 100 exercises, counted and graphed our Food Bank donations, counted the collections of objects they brought in and had fun making a picture of themselves when they are 100 years old!
