Our Learning This Week...

Hello! It was a short week. Here's what we did!

---------------------------------------

In reading we learned the /ph/ and /ng/ sounds. Students played games, listened to stories and practiced making words with these letters in them. Here are some videos to help them review these sounds.

In writing we continued with learning how to stretch our sentences with some hilarious results! Students continued to develop their understanding of sentence structure (subject i.e. the naming part and predicate i.e. the telling part). Then they added a 'where', a 'when' and a 'why' to their sentence. For example, "She likes pizza." became "She likes cheese pizza in the park every morning for breakfast." We coloured coded our sentences to help us remember to include each part.

In math, we continued to learn about addition and subtraction. We focused on the addition strategy of counting on. Students learned to begin counting with the first number, rather than counting all the objects, and then counting on. In the picture below, students put a certain number of counters under their paper. Then they put some more counters next to the paper. They had to remember the amount under the paper and then count on to get the total. We then showed this as addition equation.

In social we talked more about the meaning of PAST and PRESENT. Students had to sort pictures into a chart based on whether they showed items from the past or the present.

In art we learned about an artist named Wassily Kandinsky. We examined his art and noted his use of colour and shape. Kandinsky wanted his art to evoke a feeling or mood and also to communicate, in visual form, sounds and music. He tried to capture sounds he heard in his artwork. The students began an art project based on Kandinsky's famous painting "Squares with Concentric Circles", but they are painting hearts instead of circles.

In gym, we began a unit on dance. The students have learned the "Bunny Hop" and the "Chicken Dance" so far. Ask your child to show you the steps : )

Doin' the Bunny Hop!
