Our Learning This Week...

Here's a peek at our week!

-------------------------------------

In ELAL we have been learning about long vowel sounds and the "Magic e" (a.k.a. silent e). Students learned that when a word has the CVCe spelling pattern the vowel will say it's name. For example, lake, late, sane, tame etc. Below is a short video that helps to explain this concept. They also listened to the story of the "Mighty Silent E".

In writing, we have been learning about the importance of organizing our ideas in a logical sequence. Students listened to stories and retold the story events in the correct order. The also worked in groups to order picture cards in a logical sequence and then one their own.

In math, we have been working on the making ten strategy for addition. Students played games in which they tried to spin two numbers that equal 10. Knowing pairs of numbers that add to ten can help students to solve problems like 9+6 or 8+7 by simply adding to one number to make ten and taking away the same amount from the other number. For example, 9+6 becomes 10+5. The students already know that 10 and 5 more makes 15 (from our work with base ten blocks) so that is easier and quicker to solve.

In health, students learned all about Pink Shirt Day. We discussed how Pink Shirt Day began and why we wear pink shirts. We learned about what bullying is and what it is not. Students discussed the signs of bullying versus conflict and mean moments.

In P.E. we have been learning how to play badminton. They had fun bouncing the birdie on their rackets, trying to hit it into a target, and volleying to a partner.

This week we also had a new member join our class. Ms. Toy is learning to be a teacher and will be in our classroom until the end of April. She has already made connections with the students and is excited to start teaching!
