Here's a sneak peek at our week : ) ----------------------------------------------------- This week we finished our animal research writing. The students worked on editing their writing for capitals, periods and spelling. They also put the finishing touches on their illustrations.   In math, students worked through math centres practicing sorting 2D and 3D objects.  In social, we learned about the history and culture of Meteghan. Students learned that Nova Scotia was originally settled by the French and many people who live there still speak French and celebrate their Acadian heritage. In science, we talked about the summer solstice and went on a community walk to look for signs of summer.  On our walk we played a game called Camouflage. This is kind of like hide n' seek. The students try to blend in with their environment and the teacher tries to spot them. Friday was National Indigenous People's Day. We read the book "The Medicine Wheel: Stories of a Hoop Dancer...

Hello Everyone! It was a busy week! I hope you all enjoyed the Trickster performance. I know the kids had fun preparing for it.  Here a look at what else we did this week : ) ‐----------------------------------------- On Monday we were at the Sam Centre learning all about the history of the Stampede, traditions and communities. The students watched a movie about the Stampede, handled some artifacts and explored the various exhibits. We want to thank all our parent volunteers who came with us. Without you it would not have been possible!! Of course the big deal this week was working with our Trickster artists! In math we continued exploring 3D shapes. Students played a fun game in which they selected a shape in a bag and tried to describe it without looking at it. Then they had to guess what shape it was. In Science, our  caterpillars are big and fat. Most have now formed their chrysalis and I was even able to catch one of them forming their chrysalis on video. The students did...

The first week of June is done. One down.... three to go! Here's a look at what we did this week : ) -------------------------------------------- This week we have been busy learning about compound words and homonyms. The students played some matching games and made some examples of their own. Homonyms We have also continued to work on non-fiction writing about polar bears. The students are doing an excellent job of taking the jot notes they researched and making them into sentences.  In math, we have learned about 2D and now 3D shapes. The students went searching for examples of 2D shapes in the classroom and practiced sorting 2D shapes into different groups based on a number of criteria. For example, sort the shapes so that only the rectangle and square are together or sort so that only one shape is in a group.  They also looked for 3D shapes in the classroom and got to build paper models of 3D shapes while learning about the faces, vertices and edges. In science we worked o...

Our learning this week.... ----------------------------------------------------------------- In writing, students worked with a partner to research polar bears. Each group of students researched a different aspect of polar bears such as their appearance, diet, habitat, babies, threats etc. The kids did an excellent job using books and websites on the computers to find the information. Then they shared this information with their classmates and began writing their own research report. Students are learning to take the jot notes provided by their classmates and change them into sentences in their writing. They are also remembering to use capitals, periods and spaces in their written work.  This week we learned about the 'ough' sounds. These four letters make many different sounds such as in cough, dough, rough, through and thought. Students played a game sorting words with the different sounds, building words, finding rhyming words and more.  We also learned about contract...
