This Week in Room 21...
The first week of June is done. One down.... three to go! Here's a look at what we did this week : )
--------------------------------------------
This week we have been busy learning about compound words and homonyms. The students played some matching games and made some examples of their own.
Homonyms
We have also continued to work on non-fiction writing about polar bears. The students are doing an excellent job of taking the jot notes they researched and making them into sentences.
In math, we have learned about 2D and now 3D shapes. The students went searching for examples of 2D shapes in the classroom and practiced sorting 2D shapes into different groups based on a number of criteria. For example, sort the shapes so that only the rectangle and square are together or sort so that only one shape is in a group.
They also looked for 3D shapes in the classroom and got to build paper models of 3D shapes while learning about the faces, vertices and edges.
In science we worked on creating a comic strip about the life cycle of a butterfly, chicken, duck or other animal of their choice. We looked at some examples of comic strips and noted the different features such as speech bubbles and thought bubbles. After doing an example as a class the kids got to work making their own. They had a very fun time trying to make it funny as well as factual!
Last but not least, on Tuesday, we headed to the zoo for a fun day exploring the exhibits and learning all about the arctic. We learned a lot about polar bears and other animals living in the far north. We got to handle many biofacts and played a couple fun games!
In social we nearly finished ourcommunity booklets. The students have learned about the location, land, climate, resources, weather, animals and industries of this region of Canada.
Important Information & Reminders:
- Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
- Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
- RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
