This Week in Room 21....

Hello Everyone! It was a busy week! I hope you all enjoyed the Trickster performance. I know the kids had fun preparing for it.  Here a look at what else we did this week : )

On Monday we were at the Sam Centre learning all about the history of the Stampede, traditions and communities. The students watched a movie about the Stampede, handled some artifacts and explored the various exhibits. We want to thank all our parent volunteers who came with us. Without you it would not have been possible!!






















Of course the big deal this week was working with our Trickster artists!















In math we continued exploring 3D shapes. Students played a fun game in which they selected a shape in a bag and tried to describe it without looking at it. Then they had to guess what shape it was.





In Science, our  caterpillars are big and fat. Most have now formed their chrysalis and I was even able to catch one of them forming their chrysalis on video. The students did some more observations of the caterpillars as they have grown and changed.




We also want to wish all the dads out there a Happy Father's Day. Thr kids have made something special for you.  We hope you like it!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!!

Monday is Fancy Day. Students are invited to wear their fanciest clothes!

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know. 
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading! 
  • Healthy Hunger is up and running. Below are the upcoming Fun Lunch dates. To order please go to the Healthy Hunger website.

Below are instructions for how to login the first time.  Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as optional activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. From time-to-time I will post new activities connected to various areas of study. Our Learning this Week...

Hello Families! We have finished our first week of school. Take a look below for a sneak peek at what we've been up to : )  ----------------- This week we have spent time getting to know each other and becoming familiar with the routines of the classroom. The students have adjusted well to full days and are really enjoying participating in morning and lunch recess! We have also read a number of books about treating others the way we want to be treated and making good choices. We read "Office Buckle and Gloria" and "Do Unto Otters" to learn about the importance of rules, safety and kindness. Students sorted various actions into good choices and poor choices and pasted them into a chart.    We also began reading books by Dr. Suess and discussing rhyme. The students listened for rhyming words in stories, played a variety of rhyming games and completed some rhyming sheets.       In math we have been working on reviewing numbers to 10 and 20 and also talking abo...

Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary.
