This week we finished our animal research writing. The students worked on editing their writing for capitals, periods and spelling. They also put the finishing touches on their illustrations.








 

In math, students worked through math centres practicing sorting 2D and 3D objects. 



















In social, we learned about the history and culture of Meteghan. Students learned that Nova Scotia was originally settled by the French and many people who live there still speak French and celebrate their Acadian heritage.






In science, we talked about the summer solstice and went on a community walk to look for signs of summer.  On our walk we played a game called Camouflage. This is kind of like hide n' seek. The students try to blend in with their environment and the teacher tries to spot them.




Friday was National Indigenous People's Day. We read the book "The Medicine Wheel: Stories of a Hoop Dancer" by Teddy Anderson and talked about how the medicine wheel teaches about how we can live in harmony with each other. We also learned about some other Medicine Wheel teachings including the four sacred medicines, four spirit animals, and the four elements.




Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know. 
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!

Hello and Happy Friday : )  I hope you had a lovely week. Here is what we have been up to! -------------------------------------- In reading we have been focusing on long vowels and silent /e/. Students have continued to build words that contain the long e sound looking or the vcv (vowel consonant vowel) pattern in words (e.g. ike, ane, ube etc.) to determine if the vowel makes a long or short sound. Students completed a number of word ladders for words that contain this pattern, In math students explored using a number line to count back to subtract and played a fun math game that helped them practice this skill.  In science students began learning about energy. They discussed what energy is and how energy is expressed through movement. Students discovered that movement includes speed, direction, pathways and levels (i.e. high, medium, low).  In social they have been learning about some of the first people to settle in what is today Calgary. Our Learning this Week...

Hello! Here's a peek at our week! --------------------------------- In language arts we continued to work on learning different letter sounds to assist us in our reading. This week we learned the /ck/ and /sh/ digraph sounds. Students made words and completed various activities listening for the /sh/ and /ck/ sounds.  In math, we have finished up our stations on numbers to 100 and a review of graphing. We also learned about even and odd numbers and how to know if a number is either even or odd. The students listened to the story Even Steven & Odd Todd and then played a game to further their understanding.  In social we finished learning about a First Nations community and the roles of men, women and children. The students then represented their learning in their visual journals. In science, students finished a winter sorting activity. Our Learning This Week...

Here's a sneak peek at our week : )  ------------------------------------------------------------------- This week we learned about the two different sounds for the /th/ digraph. Students learned that there is a quiet or unvoiced sound (e.g. thin, thank, three) and a noisy or voiced sound (e.g. then, them, than). Students found it tricky to stick their tongue out to properly pronounce this sound. It would be good to have your child practice this at home while looking in the mirror so they can see if they are sticking their tongue out or not. Below are some pictures showing the proper mouth position to help.
