This Week in Room 21....

 Our learning this week....

-----------------------------------------------------------------

In writing, students worked with a partner to research polar bears. Each group of students researched a different aspect of polar bears such as their appearance, diet, habitat, babies, threats etc. The kids did an excellent job using books and websites on the computers to find the information. Then they shared this information with their classmates and began writing their own research report. Students are learning to take the jot notes provided by their classmates and change them into sentences in their writing. They are also remembering to use capitals, periods and spaces in their written work.

This week we learned about the 'ough' sounds. These four letters make many different sounds such as in cough, dough, rough, through and thought. Students played a game sorting words with the different sounds, building words, finding rhyming words and more.

We also learned about contractions. Students learned that contractions are a single word made from two other words. One or more letters from the two words are dropped and replaced with an apostrophe to make the new word.

In math, we began to explore 2D and 3D shapes. We brainstormed all the 2D shapes that we knew and looked for examples of those shapes in the classroom. We listened to a story about a triangle that wanted to be different shapes and all the different things he could be that have that shape. For example, as a rectangle he could be a tv or a window or a picture! Then we learned about the characteristics of shapes such as their sides and corners. Students traced these shapes into their math journals and gave and indoor and outdoor example of each.

In science our butterflies have arrived! The students began doing observations of the caterpillars noting their size, shape, colour, features and behaviour. The drew and coloured a picture of their caterpillar and wrote a few sentences to go with their drawing.

This Friday we met with our buddy class again to teach them the games we have created. This is part of our wellness focus and has been a lot of fun for the students. They had a great time creating their games during gym class, writing down the rules and how to win and then teaching it to their buddy!

Important Information & Reminders:

  • Library Day is on Wednesday. If your child misses a Library Day we will try to send them on a different day, however, it will not always be possible to do so. Most times they can simply wait for the following Library Day.
  • Google Classroom - Our Google Classroom is up and running. Students can log in at school and at home and click on the various links to practice typing, math skills, reading and even do an art activity (Art Hub) or some exercise (Cosmic Yoga). Your child can go to: classroom.google.com, click on the waffle (nine dots in upper righthand corner of screen), select the Google Classroom icon and log in from there. They have already logged in at school so they will just need to put in their student email address (available in PowerSchool/My CBE Account) and their password (eg. 12345678). It's that simple. If you require assistance logging in the first time, please let me know.
  • RAZ-Kids - students brought home a sheet with information explaining how to access their online RAZ-Kids account. This is a levelled reading program that students can use to practice reading at home with their parents. Once logged in students can listen to the story, practice reading the story (with adult support if needed) and then take a short quiz to assess their comprehension of what they have read. This is a wonderful compliment to our Home Reading program. If you did not receive your child's login information please email me. Thanks and happy reading!
  • Healthy Hunger is up and running. Below are the upcoming Fun Lunch dates. To order please go to the Healthy Hunger website.
