Our Learning This Week...

Hello! It was another exciting week in Room 4. Take a peek at our learning below!

In ELAL, students learned about r-controlled vowels. We explored the vowel patterns ar, or, er, ir, and ur. Students practiced building and reading words containing these patterns, read stories featuring r-controlled vowels, and played a variety of games to strengthen their understanding of these important phonics concepts.

In math, students focused on the concepts of equality and inequality. They learned that equality means “has the same as” and that inequality means two things are unequal. Using the visual of a balance scale, students compared amounts and practiced using equal and unequal signs. They also learned that amounts can be represented in different ways using numbers and equations. For example, students explored true equations such as 3 + 1 = 4, 3 + 1 = 2 + 2, 4 = 2 + 2, and 4 = 4. These activities helped students understand that equations can show equal amounts in multiple ways.

In social studies, students began exploring the concept of economics. They learned what an economy is and discussed the different roles people play within an economy. Students learned about buyers (also called consumers) and sellers (also called producers). To help build their understanding, students began creating items that they will soon be selling to their classmates during our upcoming classroom market experiment.

In gym, students continued developing their soccer skills. They reviewed and practiced how to dribble and pass a soccer ball and also learned how to shoot on goal. Students worked hard to improve their coordination, teamwork, and control during a variety of soccer activities and games.

In science, students developed their understanding of parents and offspring. They examined several examples of animal and plant offspring and discussed how parents and offspring can be similar and different. Students enjoyed making observations and sharing connections between living things and their young.

Last, but not least some new friends joined our class on Friday. We welcomed 8 baby caterpillars into our room. We will be observing their growth and changes over the next few weeks until they turn into butterflies. Stay tuned!!!
