Our Learning This Week...
Hello Everyone! Happy February : ) Take a look at what we have been working on this week.
In ELAL students worked on using sentence starters to write about various topics in their journals. They are learning to vary the way they start their sentences to add interest to their writing. The students enjoyed writing about their favourite colour, their favourite animal and their favourite landmark or region of Canada.
In math, we continued learing about 2D and 3D shapes. Towards the end of the week, the students had an opportunity to rotate through a variety of math stations in which they had to use their knowledge of shapes to sort, compare and manipulate shapes in a variety of ways. This required students to work cooperatively and also to think logically and problem solve to determine the rule needed to correctly sort the shapes. They also worked on building 3D shapes using toothpicks and plasticine to better visualize the number of sides, edges and vertices.
In science, students reviewed the concepts of direction and speed. Then they learned about the concept of a pathway. Students learned that pathways can be straight, curved, zigzag or spiral. We created a large maze on the floor and the students took turns giving directions to move the "robot" (owl) through the maze to its nest and then to its food source. They had to really think about which direction they wanted the "robot" to move and how many spaces. Then they worked with a partner to create different pathways through a smaller grid and gave directions to their partner.
In social we began discussing what culture and heritage are. The students learned that culture refers to language, food, music, beliefs, holidays and much more while heritage is what has been passed down to you from your ancestors. We read the book "All Are Welcome' and discussed how Canada is made up of people from many different cultures and places and shared some of the special foods, holidays and other things from their own cultural background.
In gym we have been learning about dance. The students learned to do the Chicken Dance, the Bunny Hop, the Macarena and the YMCA.
