Our Learning This Week....

 Hello! Here's a look at this week's learning...


In language arts students continued working on developing their visualization skills. They listened to the story 'Owl Moon' by Jane Yolen. As students listened they worked on creating a single image visualization rather than a series of scenes from the book. This involved trying to imagine a birds-eye view of the story. They also worked on developing their ability to identify words that evoke sounds, feelings and other senses. 




In math, students explored 3D shapes and their characteristics. They learned that 3D shapes have length, height and width and can be described by the number of faces, edges and vertices. They played a Mystery Shape game in which they had to describe a shape only by how it feels, not by looking at it. They also created 3D shapes from nets. They cut them out and then folded them to make the 3D shapes. Finally they used these to create a 3D shape city! 



In science, students began exploring different types of energy. They looked at movement energy such as how things can move, in what direction and at different speeds. They also began to explore light and sound energy. They listened to a variety of sounds and tried to guess what each one was without seeing it. There were lots of laughs and some funny guesses as to what each sound could be.

In gym, we had a fun week of ga-ga ball. The students played two types of ga-ga ball-- infinity and jailbreak.  In infinity the students are never out. They go back forth between each ga-ga ball pit if they get hit by the ball. In the jail break version, they must stand outside the ga-ga ball pit if they get hit and wait for the teacher to yell "jail break" before they can go back in.

It is hard to believe that the month of May is now passed. As we look foward with anticipation and excitement to the month of June, here's a look at our learning this past week : )  ------------------------------------------------------- In language arts students have continued to hone their elaboration skills learning a variety of new vocabulary words to use in their writing in place of more general or ordinary terms. Students listened to a video about 'triple scoop' words and brainstormed a list of words that can be used in place of more everyday words. For example, in place of the word 'big' students can use 'huge, enormous, gigantic, humungous, ginormous' to make their writing more interesting and engaging.  Students also learned about the different sounds for the /-ed/ suffix: -t, -d and -ed (-ud). Our Learning This Week...

Hello! Happy Friday : ) I hope you all have a lovely weekend. Here's what we have been up to. -------------------------------------- In language arts we are learning about the parts and elements of stories. Students listened to, read and discussed several stories identifying the various story elements (character, setting, events, problem and solution). After reading and retelling each story the students then worked on sequencing and organizing the various elements into the proper part of the story (i.e. beginning, middle or end).   In math, students began a new unit on patterns and sorting. They began by learning about the different attributes of objects such as size, shape and colour. Then they practiced sorting various objects using different criteria or characteristics.  In social, students began presenting their traditions to their classmates. Our Learning This Week...

Here's a look at our learning : )  ----------------------------------------------------- In language arts, the students began planning their fractured fairy tale stories. They began by drawing their characters, setting and story events. Then they began writing the first draft of their stories. In math, students learned about measurement. First they brainstormed different types of measurement such as length, height, and weight. Then they learned how to properly measure objects using either comparison or units. Students practiced using non-standard units of measurement to find the length, height and width of various items.  In science, they continued to learn about the needs of plants and animals. First they played a game in which they had to trade cards to get their needs met. Then we looked at the different ways that plants and animals get their food.
