Our Learning This Week...

Hello! It's a chilly Friday! Winter has arrived! I hope everyone stays warm and safe this weekend : )  Here's what we have been up to.

In language arts students have been reviewing many concepts taught such as capitalization rules and parts of speech (i.e. nouns and verbs) and applying these in their written work. This week we also read a story entitled "If I Built a School" by Chris Van Dusen. After listening to the story students learned about the writing process. They began by brainstorming their ideas of what their dream school would look like. Then students used a planning sheet to sketch out their ideas. Finally, they used a variety of sentence starters to communicate their ideas in sentences. They came up with some fantastic ideas that I really think the school board should consider : )  For example, having a petting zoo, trampoline park, garden and flying desks!

In math, students have been learning about the concept of subtraction. Students learned that when we subtract we are taking away or getting less. They practiced solving subtraction problems by acting out problems, drawing pictures, playing games and using counters. On Thursday, we had a quick math check-in to see how they were doing with their understanding of subtraction and addition (which we did last week).

In science, students learned about the measureable properties of objects such as length, weight and area. Students used direct comparison to determine if objects were longer/shorter, lighter/heavier etc. Students recorded the results of their investigation in their journals.

In social studies, students began to learn about the various regions of Canada and the various landforms and landmarks associated with each. After watching several videos and discussing the different types of physical features (mountains, lakes, rivers, valleys etc.) and landmarks-- Rocky Mountains (natural) vs. Calgary Tower (manmade)-- they worked on sorting pictures into the correct category.

In gym, students have been learning about basketball. They have learned how to dribble, pass and shoot. They have also been learning how to maintain control when dribbling so that they do not lose control of the basketball.
