Our Learning This Week...

Hello Everyone & Happy Friday! I hope everyone has had a lovely week. Here's a peek at our learning this week : )

In language arts the students have been learning about common and proper nouns. Students learned the acronym M.I.N.T.S to help them remember the various words that need to be capitalized in a sentence. They played some fun games and fixed sentences missing capital letters to reinforce this skill.

In math, students finished learning about greater than/less than/equal to and putting numbers in sequence. They watched a fun video about a crocodile that eats the larger number and built numbers using manipulatives (cubes, base ten blocks) and then 'ate' the larger number. Students also started learning about addition. They discussed the concept of addition, the meaning of the '+' and '=' signs, explored adding by acting out addition problems and solved addition sentences using manipulatives.

In science, students began exploring the concept of matter. They answered the question "What is matter'?" (what everything is made of) and learned some of the observable properties (size, shape, colour, material, texture) of matter. They watched a video explaining these concepts and picked a mystery object to describe it (using it's various properties) to the class. The kids had fun trying to guess each other's mystery objects.

In social, they listened to some songs to learn about the provinces and territories of Canada. Then they labelled a map of Canada with the names of each and coloured it.

In gym, we finished off a fun week using scooters! The students first learned about how to use the scooters safely. They played many fun games such as 'Red Light/Green Light', several versions of tag and competed in some relay races. They also learned how to use the scooters while laying on their tummies, going backwards and balancing a bean bag on their heads. Using scooters is great for developing core strength and endurance. It's a lot tougher than it looks!
