Our Learning This Week...

Hello! It was a short but busy week. Here's what we have been up to : )

This week in writing, we learned how to take a kernel sentence and stretch it out by adding interesting details about the who, what, when, where, why, and how. For example, instead of writing, “The dog sits,” we can make it more descriptive and detailed: “The cute dog sits on the carpet next to the fireplace at night to stay warm.” Students had lots of fun adding their own creative details to simple sentences and sharing their “stretchy sentences” with the class.

In math, we practiced skip counting by 2s all the way to 100! We played a game where we passed a bean bag around the circle while counting by twos, covered the numbers we said on a 100 chart with colourful bingo chips, and completed an activity sheet to show our understanding. Everyone is becoming faster and more confident with skip counting!

During social studies, we learned about maps and their uses. We watched two short videos to learn that a map is a picture of a place on Earth and discovered the important parts of a map such as the title, key, symbols, and compass rose. Students then began creating a map of our classroom, using symbols to represent desks, tables, the carpet area, and other furniture. It was exciting to see how everyone used their creativity and understanding to design their maps.

In science, we focused on the Scientific Method. We reviewed each step together and then worked through them as a group to explore what would happen if we lit a tea bag on fire. We made sure to follow safety rules—students stayed at their desks while the teacher performed the experiment at the front of the room. Before starting, everyone made a hypothesis, or prediction, about what might happen. Some thought it would just burn, others thought it might melt, and a few thought it would actually fly! Students gave thoughtful reasons for their predictions, and then we carried out the experiment, observed what happened, and recorded the materials, steps, observations, and conclusion on our lab sheets.

To end our week, we had a fantastic Friday Halloween celebration! Students listened to some fun and slightly spooky Halloween stories, dressed up in their amazing costumes, and took part in the school-wide parade. We also created beautiful Halloween silhouette art using chalk pastels to make our spooky scenes come to life. It was a fun and festive way to finish a week full of learning and creativity!
