Our Learning This Week...
Hello Everyone! Here is a peek at our week!
This week we have been working on understanding the difference between a sentence and a sentence fragment. Students continue to review the parts of a sentence (i.e. naming part and telling part) and learning how to distinguish between sentences that have both parts and those that don't. Students played a game sorting sentences and sentence fragments into groups. They then practiced writing sentences with both a naming and telling part.
In math, we continued to build our knowledge of place value and also looked at expanded form to express the number of hundreds, tens and ones in a number. We also revisited counting to 100 and 1000 and worked on counting collections of objects up to 100.
In science, we looked at what is a question and questioning. Students learned that a question often begins with the 5Ws and 1H-- i.e. who, what, when, where, why and how. Students practiced asking questions and distinguishing questions from statements. This is an important part of building their understanding of the Scientific Method.
We also had a special guest speaker, Constable Melissa, come and speak to us about managing our feelings. After learning about our emotions and how they can sometimes feel overwhelming the students brainstormed different strategies or tools they can use to help them when they're feeling upset, scared, or down.
In social, we have been learning about the historical treaties and residential school history in Canada. Students learned that a treaty is an agreement between two groups on how to share the land and the rights and responsibilities of each group. They also examined what a land acknowledgement is and why they are important. As a school students worked on creating a bulletin board display on how we work together at EMJ and how we belong and are connected at our school.
Students also had a blast this week learning to play Gaga Ball. Ask your child how to play.
We ended the week getting together with our Buddy class for the first time this year. The students listened to a story entitled, 'Me and My Sit Spot'. A 'sit spot' is a place outdoor where students will go to work throughout the year to do observations, ask questions, and explore the environment.. The students sat with their buddy in a chosen sit spot and used their 5 senses to explore and record their observations.
