Our Learning This Week...

Hello! This Sunday is Father's Day. We want to wish all the dad's out there a relaxing day spent with family and friends. The students have made a cute card and gift to share with you. Enjoy!

---------------------------------

This week the students have been working on building words using letter tiles listening for words that end with less common letter patterns (e.g. -ind, -old, -olt, -tch) to develop their familiarity with and ability to recognize and read these words when they see them in print. Students have also continued to learn about non-fiction books and many students have been noticing non-fiction books in our classroom library. They are quite excited to realize that a book about spiders or trucks is actually a non-fiction book and has many of the text features we have discussed in class!

In math, we continued to learn about 3D shapes and their characteristics. Students learned how to draw these shapes, determine the number of faces, vertices and edges and made 3D shapes using paper nets. Students also played a game in which they had to try to guess a shape based on its characteristics.

In science, they learned about the research process and began researching coyotes. First they brainstormed questions (using who, what, when, where, why and how) they wanted to answer about coyotes. Then students learned about how to record the information they find using jot notes. Finally, we began reading some non-fiction books and recording facts about their habitat and food. Coyotes are an important part of the prairie environment. They are also an important animal in First Nations culture and tradition. Students learned about the significance of coyotes to the First Nations peoples.

Planning for reserach & taking Jot Notes

This week we also had a few visits with the ducks-- an a duck walk in the hallway!!-- before they have to go back to the farm. They were so cute! We got to watch them dive and splash around in a tray of water. They were very funny and entertaining to watch. The students also got to hold them which they really enjoyed. Students determined that ducks would prefer a water environment such as a lake or a pond because it would best meet their needs for food, shelter and water.

We ended the week with a visit from our Gr. 4/5 Buddies and a delicious cookie treat paid for by School Council. Thank you!
