Our Learning This Week...
Here's a peek at our work! Also, School Council is supplying all students and staff with a special cookie treat (order forms coming home soon) on June 16. See below for details:
--------------------------------------------
This week the students finished writing their fractured fairy tales. They also began learning about how to revise their work looking for capitals, periods and meatball spaces. In addition, they continued to look at how they could elaborate their writing by adding in details such as dialogue, description (using the 5 senses) and sound effects.
In math, students learned about the concepts of distance and area. Students used string to compare the distance between objects such as pathways through a maze and order them from longest to shortest. Students also learned about what area is and to measure the area of an object. They practiced finding the area of their desks and other objects in the room.
In science, students examined the concept of the environment. They learned that an environment is a collection of living and non-living things that live in a certain area of land or water. They then explored the various environments found in Alberta such as the mountains, forests, lake, river and prairie environments. Then they brainstormed some of the different animals that live in Alberta. After that, students selected one of the animals and constructed a model of the environment that animal lives in using loose parts. To finish off, they labelled sources of food, water and shelter in their animal's environment.
They also continued to observe and record the growth of the seeds we planted a week ago. Most of the seeds have not yet sprouted, but one is already growing a small sprout! The students were very excited to see it poking up through the dirt : )
On Friday, we got together with our Buddy class and explored some of the new links in our Google Classroom. I have put lots of new links covering many of the topics we are learning in school. The kids had fun trying out lots of new games!

Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in.
