Hello! Happy Friday! Here is a look at what we did this week.
-----------------------------------------------------------
This week we learned about the 'schwa' sound. This is the most common vowel sound in English, but most of us don't even realize it! The 'schwa' sound is like a short u sound, but the sound can be made by any vowel. For example, in the word 'banana' the /a/ at the end of the word makes the 'schwa' or 'lazy u' sound. There are many other examples of the 'schwa' sound in the table below.
We also listened to the book, 'The Not-So-Lazy Schwa' to better understand this sound and when to use it. Students learned to 'flex the vowel' sound (say the word using the long, short and schwa sounds) when reading words to determine the correct sound for vowels in words. We practiced saying many words using the long, short and schwa vowel sounds to determine which was the correct pronunciation. Click the link below to listen to the story.
In math, students continued to explore measurement. They learned about using multiple units to measure and how to measure when you have only one unit to use. We also discussed the concept of 'depth' and how that differs from height. Students learned that 'depth' is the measurement inside of an object from top to bottom such as a pool or a hole. We watched a fun video about how deep the ocean is and then worked on measuring the depth of objects in the classroom. The kids loved it!
In science, the students learned about the differences between how plants move and how animals move. We watched some videos and discussed the ways in which we saw plants and animals moving. Then the students played a game of charades in which they each got a turn to act out a plant or animal while the rest of the class tried to guess what it was.
In gym, we spent the week learning to play a variety of different dodgeball games. The students had fun learning how to play Doctor Dodgeball, Jailbreak, Traditional and Jail dodgeball.
In social, we finished our timelines of Calgary and visited Fort Calgary to learn even more about the history of our city. The students had a fantastic time creating a 3D map of Calgary and seeing how it changed over time. The also got to look at and handle a variety of artifacts. They had a fun time determining what each object was made of, what it was used for and who would have used it. They also played a variety of Indigenous games to test their strength and hand-eye coordination.
