Our Learning This Week...
Hello! Hope you all had a lovely week. Here's a peek at our week : )
-------------------------------------------------
In language arts, students have been learning about the parts of speech. They learned what a noun, a verb and an adjective is. Students participated in a classroom "scoot" (scavenger hunt) in which they had to look for words hidden in the classroom and then decide what part of speech each word belonged to.
In math, the students have been exploring patterns. They have learned that a pattern is something that repeats. Patterns also have a core and in the core are terms or elements. Patterns can be expressed or labelled using AB, ABC, ABCD, ABB etc. Students looked for patterns in the classroom and created patterns using actions, pictures and manipulatives.
Students have also continued to learn about fractions. Students know that a fraction represents a part of a whole or a part of a set. Students have learned to determine if a picture is showing 1/2 or not and have learned to divide shapes and groups of objects to show half.
They played a game with a partner called "Give Me Half" in which they rolled dice and then separated them into two groups or parts to show half of the number. For examlple, if you roll 8 then you would make two groups of 4 since 4 is half of 8.
They also played a fun sorting game on the computer where they had to sort pictures into 'half and not half'.
In science, the students worked on creating a toy that can move. Students learned about wheels and how wheels can influence the movement of objects. For example, they can make it easier to move objects and make objects move more quickly. Students began creating a toy that has wheels using a variety of materials. Next week, they will have a chance to present and test their creations.
In social, students began working in groups to research an event from Calgary's past. Each group was given an event and asked to research and record the 5W's (who, what, when, where, why). Students will use the information they collect to create a timeline of important events in Calgary's past.
In gym, students began using a variety of new gymnastics equipment. They rotated through various stations that included mats, benches, ladders, trestles, balance beams, bars, ropes, crash mats and more! Students will have one more week to hone their skills on the stations before moving on to our ever popular Mission Impossible obstacle course challenge!
Important Updates & Reminders:
Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!
Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. If you need your child's email or password information let me know. I can resend it.
