Our Learning This Week...

Hello and Happy Friday! Here's what we have been up to!

----------------------------------------------------------------

This week the students learned the sounds for the tricky y (sometimes called Y in Disguise!). They learned that y can make the /e/ or /i/ sound at the end of a word. For example, in the words happy, puppy and baby we can hear the long /e/ sound. In the words sky, try, cry we can hear the long /i/ sound. Students listened to a story and tried to identify words that ended in the long /e/ sound. Students also completed a Word Ladder listening for the y (i.e. long /i/) sound in various words.

Students also learned about compound words. They learned that compound words are made up of two different base words that often have a very different meaning from the compound word. For example, 'rainbow' is made by joining the words 'rain + bow'. After working as a group to match up base words to make compound words, they completed a sheet with a similar activity independently.

In math, students continued to explore solving word problems using both addition and subtraction. They worked on looking for key words, selecting the correct operation to solve (+ or -) the problem and drawing their solution. They also played a game in which they worked together to solve various word problems and race their way around the board!

Students also explored the concept of Fact Families. A fact family is a group of 3 numbers that are all 'related' to each other. They watched a video explaining the concept and then small groups of students created addition and subtraction questions using number cards for different fact families.

In social studies, we began talking about traditions. After listening to a video explaining what a tradition is, Miss Toy and I shared a tradition from our own families. Students were given a yellow sheet to take home on which they are going to write (with adult assistance) about their family tradition. Over the next few weeks, students will have the opportunity to share this with the class. Please check the date on your child's form so that you know when they will be presenting.

In science, students furthered their knowledge of movement by investigating different types of speeds. They did a whole class activity to explore how to move fast and slow from one side of the classroom to the other and what it means to change speeds. Then students did a cut and paste activity sheet to help them identify objects and animals that move slow or fast.

In P.E., we began our unit on gymnastics. The students have been learning about various ways to move such as animal movements, rolls, balances and bridges. So far students have learned how to do a log roll, pencil roll and "egg" roll (sideways somersault). Before each lesson students also do a short warm-up in which they do a number of stretches to prevent injury.

Important Updates & Reminders:

Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!

Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. If you need your child's email or password information let me know. I can resend it.
