Our Learning This Week...
We had a busy week with St. Patrick's Day and Parent-Teacher Conferences. Here's a look at what we've been up to : )
------------------------------------------------------
In reading, students have been learning about the -es and -ed suffixes. Students learned why we use these endings and when to use them. For example, -ed is used to show past tense while -es is used to show plurals when a word ends with a /sh/, /s/, /x/ and /ch/.
In writing, students continued to learn about organizing sentences. They listened to a video about the spring equinox (which was today) and then worked in groups to try to organize the sentences into a logical sequence. This brought in a bit of our science unit on the seasons and also helped students to work on organizing ideas in a piece of writing. For example, sentences with a similar idea should be grouped together.
In math, students began learning about word problems. They discussed looking for clue words to determine whether they need to add or subtract to solve the problem. Students learned that words like altogether, total, in all are telling the to add while words like 'less, fewer, difference' mean that you need to subtract to solve.

In art, students made some fun Pop Art shamrocks in the style of Andy Warhol's famous artworks. He is known for his use of colour and using everyday objects in his artwork. They also learned a little bit about warm and cool colours and how they create a different feel in a piece of art. Warm colours create a cheerful and energetic feeling while cool colours are calming.
In science, students have continued to learn about movement. They engaged in some fun experiments testing objects to determine if they bounce, roll or slide.
The students have also had fun making actions to go along with a song about movement that our student teacher, Ms. Toy, created. I have posted the song in our Google Classroom. There is also a link below you can click to listen to the song!

In gym we finished up learning about how to use a skipping rope. Students had fun using the long ropes and trying different "tricks" with their ropes like skipping backwards, skipping on one foot and skipping while jumping side-to-side.
Important Updates & Reminders:
Google Classroom is available for students to access. Below are instructions for logging in. I have recently added a number of activities that cover many of the skills and concepts we have learned this past term. Have a look!
Please note that the use of activities in our Google Classroom is optional. These are not assigned, but are offered as extra activities that can support some of the learning we are doing in class. We will also be using the websites during class throughout the year at different times. If you have trouble logging in or questions about the classroom, let me know. If you need your child's email or password information let me know. I can resend it.
